Blondie’s Holiday

Dagwood [Arthur Lake] is an ambitious architect who successfully convinces the influential bank president Samuel Breckenridge to award his firm the contract to build a new bank in town. His boss, George M. Radcliffe, is overjoyed upon hearing the news and offers Dagwood a modest raise of $2.50. Excited to share his good fortune, Dagwood calls his wife, Blondie, to tell her about the raise. However, a misunderstanding occurs: Blondie believes he has received a $250 increase, which leads her to boast about Dagwood’s supposed fortune among their friends, creating a buzz in their social circle.

As a class reunion approaches, Blondie is part of the planning committee. When her friends, including a boisterous housewife named Cynthia Thompson and Paul Madison, a former high school suitor, learn about Dagwood’s “wealth,” they pressure Blondie to cover the $400 expense for an elegant dinner at the reunion, a费用 he cannot realistically afford. Blondie, eager to uphold her husband’s honor, agrees to pay, leaving Dagwood frantic as he faces the daunting task of raising the money.

In his desperation, Dagwood considers gambling—he approaches a seasoned gambler named Pete Brody for advice on betting at the racetrack. Unfortunately, when the bank president catches wind of Dagwood’s gambling interest, he swiftly cancels the bank building contract, furious that Dagwood jeopardized the firm’s reputation. Radcliffe, angry at the turn of events, fires Dagwood on the spot.

Meanwhile, Blondie contributes by sewing women’s hats, earning $200. Still short of funds, Dagwood decides to visit an illegal gambling parlor where he bets the remaining amount on horses. Guided by an elderly woman, he places a bet on the wrong horse, but luck turns in his favor when the horse wins. The police raid the gambling spot just as Dagwood’s fortune seems secured. In the chaos, he helps the old lady escape unnoticed but gets arrested himself.

Despite being in jail, Dagwood tries to make it to the reunion dinner. He calls Radcliffe to bail him out, but unexpectedly, Samuel Breckenridge arrives first and pays his bail. It is then revealed that the old woman from the gambling parlor is actually Mrs. Breckenridge, who appreciates Dagwood’s efforts to prevent a scandal. As a token of gratitude, Mrs. Breckenridge ensures the completion of the bank contract with Dagwood’s firm, under the condition that Radcliffe will cover the cost of the reunion dinner, which she now pays for herself.

In the end, Dagwood manages to make it to the reunion just in time, arriving at the dinner and settling the bill. His quick thinking and perseverance not only save his reputation but also secure the future of his company, proving that honesty and determination can triumph over chaos.
