In post-war France, the heroic police inspector Jules Clément is fatally wounded by the notorious Pierrot le fou, a figure who will loom over the story. On his deathbed, he tells his young son Michel Clément:
You’ll be a cop, my son!
Years later, [Michel Clément] finds himself an underwhelming student at the Police Academy, squeezed by the expectations of a worried mother and a family that still believes in the old man’s dream. He secures a place in the inspector exams thanks to a special jury indulgence, and soon he becomes a judicial police trainee at the Paris Police Prefecture, stepping into a world that is as admiring as it is unforgiving.
On his first day, the naïve recruit is beaten by seasoned officers who mistake him for an accomplice of the infamous public enemy Roger Morzini. The incident is captured by the ambitious journalist Marie-Anne Prossant, daughter of the powerful publisher Louis Prossant, who is determined to turn every moment into a story. Marie-Anne is quickly drawn into Michel’s orbit and is assigned to the team alongside the veteran Inspector Marcel Watrin. With little experience but a lot of ambition, Michel dreams of proving his worth by catching Morzini himself.
Morzini, whose face the public now knows all too well, undergoes cosmetic surgery to reinvent his image, choosing a look remarkably similar to that of actor Gérard Depardieu. Marie-Anne publicly mocks the gangster, hoping to lure him out of hiding for an exclusive interview. Morzini, secretly furious at the dig, decides to retaliate.
When Morzini threatens Marie-Anne over the phone, Michel is tasked with keeping her safe. Yet this assignment is a ruse—older, more experienced officers monitor the operation while Michel is pulled into undercover proximity with Marie-Anne in the hope of drawing Morzini into the open. During this dangerous game, Michel finds himself falling for the journalist he’s supposed to protect.
Under the pretense of gathering expert advice, Morzini befriends Michel and gleans a shocking amount about the police’s inner workings and their plan to capture him. The trap tightens when Morzini kidnaps Marie-Anne and extorts a ransom from her influential father.
Michel is arrested by his colleagues who suspect him of collaborating with Morzini. A tracking device is secretly planted in Michel’s jacket to guide the hunt, and when the moment comes, his team lets him slip away, hoping he will lead them straight to Morzini. A fortunate discovery of the device helps Michel slip free and pivot toward the decisive confrontation.
With the help of a few allies, Michel abducts Morzini’s mother, Denise Morzini, who reveals the location of her son’s hideout. The chase leads them to an abandoned mansion where Morzini holds Marie-Anne hostage. Michel storms the place with an excavator, smashing through the building and cornering Morzini on a precarious rooftop.
The daring rescue culminates in a tense finale: Marie-Anne is saved, Morzini is left stranded atop the half-demolished structure, and the injured but determined Michel and Marie-Anne share a moment of relief and triumph. As the dust settles, they phone her father to report the successful rescue, a private vow to begin shaping the future they’ll face together.
