Sach Jones and Slip Mahoney are copy boys for the New York Daily Chronicle, and they hear that two local police officers, including their friend Officer Gabe Moreno, have been shot in the line of duty while trying to stop a robbery. Gabe survives, but his partner does not, so they decide to help find the person responsible — a gangster tied to the Loop Gang from Chicago. The pair aims to expose the mob by going undercover, and they receive a green light from their editor, James Cobb, to pursue the story further. They encounter two members of the Loop Gang and befriend them, which leads to a meeting with their boss, Angles Carson. Angles takes a liking to the boys, and soon they are drawn into the gang’s next scheme — a new robbery.
Before long, they meet Angles’ boss, Mr. Carver, who mistakes them for tough gangsters he can use in his operation. He fills them in on a plan to rob the Gotham Steel Works the next day, and Slip relays this information to the police. An ambush is set to stop the robbery and catch the gang, but someone inside slips the ambush details to Carver. Carver then shifts his plan and targets the Beacon Machine Works instead. Slip has no chance to warn the police in time, but when Carver is trying to crack open the safe at Beacon Machine Works the next evening, Slip makes a call to his editor, who passes the information forward. Unfortunately, another Chronicle employee, a cartoonist named Lowell, informs Carver that the police are coming. A showdown follows between Slip, Sach, and the Loop Gang members, and the boys are beaten badly. They are taken to the hospital, and once there, Sach asks for a nurse to care for him, but when a male nurse arrives he sends him over to Slip and prepares to leave. Just as he is about to walk out, a female nurse comes in and takes over massaging Slip’s back.
