Earlier, in a thread that ties the past to the present, his fiancée Yashoda Wimaladharma calls to remind him of jury duty. For the next three days, he must listen to a theft/murder case that has gripped the village. The defendant, Piyum, stands accused of killing John Wijesinghe; she is described as a prostitute who, unable to be paid, slipped sleeping pills into Wijesinghe’s drink and left the room as the man died. Wijesinghe’s death becomes a focal point for questions about money, power, and circumstance, casting a long shadow over the courtroom and the town.

Decades earlier, a young Suwisal returns to the village to work on his thesis, titled The Possible Result of Disillusioned Rural Youth and the Impact of the Free Education Policy. In the hush of the family home, he encounters the servant woman who works at his aunts’ house. He sleeps with her, and soon afterward leaves for the city. Through a stream of letters, he learns she is pregnant, and he stops all communication, a choice that will echo through memory as time marches on.

On the second day of the trial, Suwisal seeks counsel from his lawyer friend Vicky. He explains that he knows Piyum, the former servant at his aunt’s house, a revelation that unsettles him. [Vicky] tells him to keep quiet and bide his time until the trial ends, a pragmatic if morally fraught piece of advice. The defendant does not reveal that she recognizes Suwisal, which causes him to question his own character and the actions he took so long ago. Guilt gnaws at Suwisal, and he cannot stay away from the jail. He goes to see Piyum, hoping to understand, to seek some reckoning for the consequences of his youth. She reveals that she gave birth to a boy who lived only a week. She describes trying to locate Suwisal in the city, only to be led astray and ultimately to “lose her way.” She asks him to stop contacting her, and the final image is of her walking out of the jail, leaving behind a memory that refuses to settle.
