The whole story of Alcatraz Island (1937) explained, from the opening scene to the final frame: every key event, every twist and what it all adds up to. Read it as a quick recap before the sequel, to check a scene you missed, or to finally understand what really happened.

Gat Brady, a racketeer, is on trial for cheating the government. The proceedings reveal a proposed deal with the prosecutor that would assign him a six-month sentence in exchange for a guilty plea, but the judge rejects the plea and instead hands down a five-year term. His girlfriend, Flo Allen, vows to wait for him and to take care of Gat's daughter, clinging to hope amid the setback. The courtroom atmosphere is tense, with pressure mounting from every side.

Meanwhile, gangland associate Red Carroll abducts the girl for a ransom, a crime that leads to his capture and a sentence to the same prison as Gat Brady. The two convicts clash, and Gat quickly becomes the target of blame for the kidnapping. They are transferred to another facility, where Red Carroll is stabbed and killed with a work knife. Shocking violence erupts behind prison walls, altering the lives of all involved.

Back in the rows and courts, Gat faces a murder trial for Red Carroll's death. His defender is an unlikely ally—the man in love with Gat's daughter, described as the "guy from the New York DA's office." A fellow inmate—a friend of Gat's from prison—persuades another con to take credit for the crime, resulting in Gat's acquittal. Just as the guilty verdict seems certain, the truth surfaces: Gat's convict friend is in fact an FBI agent who has secured a recording of the killer's confession made just before the man hanged himself.

Q1

Why was Gat Brady sentenced to five years instead of accepting the plea deal?

The prosecutor offered Gat a six-month sentence in exchange for a guilty plea, but the judge rejected this deal and imposed the full five-year term instead. This harsher sentence dramatically changed Gat's fate and set the main conflict of the story in motion, as he now faced a much longer imprisonment.

Foreshadowing: The rejected plea deal establishes early on that Gat will face the maximum consequences, setting up the chain of events that follow.

  • plea deal
  • five year sentence
  • judge
  • courtroom
Q2

Who killed Red Carroll in prison?

The summary doesn't specify who actually killed Red Carroll with the work knife. What matters for the plot is that Gat Brady was blamed for the murder and put on trial for it, despite not being the actual killer.

  • Red Carroll murder
  • prison killing
  • work knife
Q3

Why was Gat Brady blamed for Red Carroll's death?

Gat and Red Carroll had already clashed in prison, with Gat being blamed for the trouble that erupted between them. When Red was stabbed and killed, the authorities naturally suspected Gat as the prime suspect due to their known conflict and his presence at the same facility.

Foreshadowing: Their earlier confrontation in prison planted the seeds for Gat to be blamed for Red's death.

  • blamed for murder
  • prison conflict
  • false accusation
Q4

Why did the FBI agent help Gat Brady get acquitted?

The FBI agent had been embedded as Gat's convict friend specifically to gather evidence and secure a confession from the real killer. His goal was to ensure the innocent man went free, which aligns with his law enforcement duty to pursue truth rather than allow a wrongful conviction.

Foreshadowing: The agent's presence as Gat's friend wasn't random, he was working undercover to build a case.

Q6

Why did another convict take credit for Red Carroll's murder?

Gat's friend from prison convinced another con to take credit for the murder. This was part of a plan to shift responsibility away from Gat and secure his acquittal. The con likely agreed to this to potentially reduce his own sentence or as a favor within the prison social hierarchy.

Foreshadowing: Gat had a loyal friend in prison who was willing to help him, though the true extent of this help wasn't revealed until later.

  • false confession
  • convict
  • taking the blame
