Nicole Stone, Elisha Cuthbert, is a 13-year-old girl who lives with her father, Raymond Stone, Joe Mantegna, a wealthy businessman. She and her parents clash over her school performance and the attention she feels she’s missing, a strain that foreshadows the crisis to come. In the moment that follows, the family dynamic is suddenly put to the test high above the ground.
On a private flight, a bolt of lightning strikes the plane and tears a hole in the cabin wall. The two pilots, Greg and Terry, Don Jordan and Martin Lacroix, are immediately injured by the electric shock and knocked unconscious, while the other two adult passengers—employees of Raymond—are hurt by a large flying first aid kit and pass out due to the dangerous negative pressure. Nicole had been playing with the first aid kit, so she ends up with an oxygen mask and bottle, and she regains consciousness after a short time. The other woman who was flying with her wakes briefly, but not for long, leaving Nicole alone again amid the chaos and the shifting, pressurized air.
The autopilot has switched on, but it is defective and cannot be deactivated. At first, Nicole communicates with air traffic controller Jeff, Charles Edwin Powell, in the tower via radio; when the radio fails, she continues to reach him through a cell phone. The first rescue attempt is made using a tanker aircraft, a type trained to approach other planes, but turbulence disrupts the plan and it falters.
In a bold turn, Jeff devises a plan: the tanker plane will fly under the private jet, allowing Nicole to drag the unconscious adults to the hatch by the front wheel. They manage to lower three of the four adults down, but turbulence breaks the connecting cable and the man who was guiding them is torn from the plane, though he saves himself with a parachute. Nicole and the remaining unconscious passenger remain aboard, with no obvious option but to attempt a landing themselves.
With calm resolve, Nicole disables the autopilot using her father’s favorite baseball bat, and she follows Jeff’s instructions to bring the plane down. The approach is tense, and her cell phone battery dies mid-flight, but she persists and completes the landing, showing resourcefulness, bravery, and a steadfast sense of responsibility in a moment of crisis. The ordeal reframes her relationship with her father and the family’s earlier tensions, revealing her capacity to act decisively under pressure and protect others when it matters most.
