From his Wings Around the Globe Rally victory, Dusty Crophopper, voiced by Cedric the Entertainer, enjoys a thriving racing career, but his engine’s gearbox becomes damaged from constantly pushing to max speed, and that specific gearbox is now out of production and unavailable anywhere. To keep him racing safely, his mechanic Dottie fits a warning light to keep his performance at a controlled level. Still, Dusty feels stifled and decides to push his limits, taking a bold flight that ends in a forced landing at Propwash Junction Airport, where he clips a pole and unintentionally starts a fire.

The resulting chaos is amplified when the town’s fire truck Mayday experiences a hose leak and the water tower is toppled, prompting a government inspector Ryker to condemn the airport for inadequate firefighting protocols in accordance with 14 CFR §139(b) until Mayday can be refurbished and a new firefighter is available. Feeling remorseful, Dusty offers to become a trained firefighter and journeys to Piston Peak National Park to join a fire and rescue crew led by Blade Ranger. The team’s training proves to be a tough challenge, especially given Dusty’s damaged engine, but he remains determined to prove himself. Maru, the team’s mechanic, outfits Dusty with two pontoons and retractable undercarriage wheels so he can serve as a single-engine air tanker firefighter. Along the way, Dusty learns that Blade was formerly an actor who played a police helicopter on CHoPs, a fact that adds depth to his hardened personality.

When news arrives that all attempts to locate a replacement gearbox have failed and Dusty’s racing career may be over, the team faces a new threat: a lightning-driven forest fire near Piston Peak. The flames combine into a large blaze that forces an evacuation during the lodge’s grand reopening, and Dusty must confront not only the fire but also his own self-doubt. His education falters in Blade’s eyes, and the two clash as Dusty attempts to refuel with water from a river in the heat of dispatch, only to be swept through rapids. Blade pulls him to safety, and Dusty confesses the truth about his damaged engine. Blade, though wary, urges him not to give up. They shelter in an abandoned mine as the fire passes, during which Blade takes a grave hit shielding Dusty. In quiet moments, Dusty learns Blade’s deeper backstory: Blade’s CHoPs co-star Nick “Loopin’” Lopez was killed in a stunt gone wrong on set, and Blade has carried that guilt into his firefighting.

Cad Spinner, the park superintendent, responds by diverting the entire water supply to roof sprinklers to protect the lodge, and although retardant isn’t an option, the firefighters are able to guide evacuees to safety. A critical rescue follows when two elderly campers, Harvey and Winnie, are trapped on a burning bridge deep in the fire zone. Dusty sprints to the scene, pushing his engine to the limit to scale a waterfall and refill his water tanks; Blade arrives to help, and together they extinguish the blaze, allowing the campers to escape. Shortly after, Dusty’s overstrained gearbox fails again; he attempts a safe landing in the forest, but one pontoon strikes a tree and he crashes, knocked unconscious.

Dusty is airlifted back to base and, after five days of recovery, learns that Maru has built a superior, refurbished gearbox that restores his engine to peak performance, enabling him to race again. He also discovers that Cad Spinner has been fired. Impressed by Dusty’s skill and heroism, Blade certifies him as a firefighter, and Mayday is refurbished. Propwash Junction is reopened, with Dusty celebrated as part of a new firefighting team alongside his Piston Peak colleagues, ready to protect the park from future fires with courage and precision.

In a mid-credits scene, Cad is seen working as a Death Valley National Park ranger.
