After Hours

In New York City, Paul Hackett leads a monotonous life as a computer word-processing consultant. He spends his evenings after work watching TV and reading, feeling empty and unfulfilled.

One evening, while seeking some excitement, Paul strikes up a conversation with Marcy in a coffee shop. After a flirtatious exchange, Paul manages to get her phone number, prompting a glimmer of hope in his otherwise dull life.

Feeling bold, Paul calls Marcy at 11:32 p.m., and she invites him to her loft in SoHo. With a mix of excitement and trepidation, Paul rushes to hail a taxi, beginning a wild night that will spiral out of control.

In a chaotic taxi ride, Paul experiences the streets of New York City at breakneck speed. During the ride, he loses his only $20 bill, forcing him to leave the cab driver unpaid.

Upon arriving at Marcy's loft, Paul meets Kiki, who is working on a papier-mâché sculpture. Their encounter takes an unexpected turn when Paul gets roped into helping her, staining his jacket in the process.

After spending time in the loft, Paul and Marcy go to a diner where they bond over their favorite movie, 'The Wizard of Oz'. Their easy chemistry seems to signal that this night might lead to something special.

At 1:40 a.m., things take a strange turn when they return to the loft, and Marcy reveals her chaotic life story. Paul's discomfort grows as her erratic behavior and a shared joint lead him to leave abruptly.

Standing in the rain and short on cash, Paul attempts to buy a subway ticket at 2:15 a.m. Only to find out that the fare has just increased, leaving him unable to go home and angry with the ticket attendant.

In a near-empty bar, Paul encounters a waitress named Julie, who confesses her misery in her job. His kindness draws a note from her, but it quickly turns into another bizarre episode in his night.

After discovering that Kiki's sculpture is being stolen, Paul chases down the burglars which leads him back to Kiki, only to find her in a peculiar situation, complicating his already chaotic night.

Filled with guilt and desperation, Paul goes to apologize to Marcy only to find her dead from an overdose. This shocking event marks a significant turning point in his evening as he grapples with the reality of her death.

As Paul tries to report Marcy's death, a vigilante mob forms, believing that he is involved in various criminal activities. This leads him to a frantic race through the city to escape their wrath.

When Paul finally gets into Club Berlin, he faces a gang of punks who shave his head against his will. This humiliating moment cements the chaos of his night as he struggles for sanity and safety.

After various misadventures, Paul finds himself being carted away in a stolen van filled with stolen goods. When he tumbles out onto the street, he realizes he's finally free, but also right back where he started.

At the end of this chaotic night, Paul returns to work at his office, appearing dazed but normal. The drudgery of his daily life resumes as if nothing significant ever happened, encapsulating the absurdity of his experiences.
