A Pair of Briefs

Tony Stevens, a junior barrister, bemoans the routine briefs and tiny fees that come with chamber life. He is thrilled when a high-paying writ for restitution of conjugal rights lands in his path, assigned to the newly arrived Frances Pilbright. The prospect of money and prestige motivates him to seize the case by any means.

Frances Pilbright arrives as the god-daughter of the instructing solicitor and niece of Sir John Pilbright, bringing the high-profile case. The brief concerns the opposite side and the marriage in question. Stevens vows to obtain it for himself and begins to plot.

Stevens handles the case as it is heard alongside Sir John, centered on a house of ill-repute run by Gale Tornado with exotic dancers. The trial proceeds as Stevens employs distractions to gain an advantage, even as he tries to disguise marmalade on his collar. The courtroom energy is mounting as the opposing sides spar.

Pilbright fights for her client, a woman whose wartime marriage was disrupted by the Blitz and for whom the marriage records were destroyed. The client claims that a later bombing caused memory loss, and she has only recently recovered the memory of the marriage. Pilbright's fierce advocacy drives the case forward.

Stevens enlists his roommate Hubert to pass him the opposing brief, allowing him to advocate for Sid Pudney. Pudney is the man the wife claims is her husband, though he denies ever being married. Stevens uses this ruse to tilt the case in the other direction.

The two barristers clash repeatedly, both in their private offices and in the courtroom, trading barbs and undercutting each other's arguments. Their squabbles escalate as the case unfolds. The tension reflects the personal stakes behind the legal battle.

About to lose, Pilbright bursts out with a furious declaration that "the Law is an Ass!" Stevens, moved by her passion, mutters agreement. The judge, Mr Justice Haddon, admonishes them and threatens severe discipline. The courtroom mood shifts from contempt to cunning as both sides push harder.

After the hearing, Stevens overhears a confidential exchange between the two parties and witnesses Sid burning their wedding certificate. The couple's deception begins to reveal itself through this act. The scene sets up the twist that the marriage did occur and was manipulated for gain.

The couple decide to part ways and both seem uncommonly relieved by the split. Stevens tails the woman to a posh hotel and confronts her about the truth. The confrontation moves the plot toward the revelation of bigamy and wealth-driven motives.

It is revealed that the pair truly were married, but the woman had later bigamously wed another man who now wields great wealth. She had brought the case to scuttle the earlier marriage and to protect her newfound wealth from any claim. The revelation shocks both camps and clarifies the deception.

Though annoyed by the deceit, Stevens and Pilbright realize they are falling for each other. The professional fallout gives way to personal attraction as they acknowledge their common bond. The case ends with a new, unexpected bond forming between them.

In the aftermath, the two barristers decide to pursue their relationship, leaving the courtroom's heavy ethics behind for now. The film closes on a note of romance and reform, as they combine legal careers with newfound affection. The tone stays light-hearted despite the deceit that powered the case.
