A Nice Indian Boy

When Naveen (Karan Soni) attends the wedding of his sister Arundhati (Sunita Mani), he finds himself at the center of attention as family and friends suggest that he should be the next to marry. Fast forward six years, and Naveen remains single, working as a doctor alongside his extroverted coworker Paul (Peter S. Kim). Struggling with his shyness, Naveen feels the weight of his parents’ discomfort regarding his sexual orientation, making romantic connections particularly challenging.

During a visit to a temple, while praying to Ganesh, Naveen unexpectedly meets a white man named Jay (Jonathan Groff). Their paths cross again at work, where Naveen learns that Jay is a professional photographer and feels an immediate attraction. When Jay invites Naveen out to see the renowned Bollywood classic, Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge (DDLJ), it becomes clear that Jay has a unique connection to Indian culture, as he shares that he was adopted by Indian immigrant parents who have since passed away.

As Naveen and Jay’s relationship deepens, they decide to move in together. However, the adjustment isn’t without its challenges. Jay’s bohemian lifestyle clashes with Naveen’s more reserved nature, and Naveen hesitates to introduce Jay to his family. In a heated moment, Jay accuses Naveen of failing to express his desires, prompting Naveen to emotionally reveal his dream of a grand family wedding, unintentionally proposing to Jay. He ultimately agrees to bring Jay home to meet Arundhati and his parents, Megha (Zarna Garg) and Archit (Harish Patel).

The meeting begins positively, but soon tension escalates. Jay becomes anxious as he navigates the pressure created by Naveen’s strained relationship with Arundhati and the small lies Naveen has told about Jay to appease Megha and Archit. Seeking relief, Jay uses a marijuana pen in the bathroom, which Arundhati later exposes to their parents’ disapproval. In the aftermath, Jay leaves, and Arundhati reveals her intention to leave her husband, shocking the entire family.

Feeling rejected, Jay decides to move out, believing that Naveen does not accept him for who he is. After some reflection, Arundhati apologizes to Naveen for her part in the conflict and stays with him. Determined to win Jay back, Naveen steps outside his comfort zone, recreating a romantic scene from DDLJ to propose properly. Joyfully, Jay accepts.

As preparations for the wedding commence, Megha becomes enthusiastic, although Archit initially struggles with the idea. Naveen confronts Archit, feeling that his father still has issues accepting his sexuality. In a turn of events, Archit invites Jay to cook together, which leads to a deeper understanding between them. Megha reassures Naveen that both she and Archit accept him but express concern that he has distanced himself from the family.

On the day of the wedding, Naveen and his family perform a choreographed dance routine for Jay, which adds a heartwarming touch to the celebration. Megha offers comfort to Arundhati regarding her divorce and delivers a moving wedding speech, bringing Archit to tears. The film concludes with a joyous scene of Naveen and Jay dancing together, surrounded by family and friends, as the bonds of love and acceptance shine through.
