Nousha Husseini, Tara Grammy, is an Iranian-American housing attorney in her early 30s living in Los Angeles, comfortable with her independence and largely uninterested in marriage. Yet her parents, Ziba Husseini, Shohreh Aghdashloo, and Reza Husseini, Houshang Touzie, constantly push for a traditional match, regularly introducing her to conservative Persian bachelors with the hope that she’ll settle down.
Her world shifts when she meets Alex Talbot, Chris O’Shea, a charismatic artist/DJ who is openly bisexual. The two connect during a public protest against sexism and misogyny, and a slow, hesitant romance begins to bloom as Nousha wonders if her parents could ever accept their relationship.
Trouble brews when her traditionalist family discovers that Alex and Nousha are living together as domestic partners. They insist on a formal marriage, and Reza credibly pressures Alex into agreement while the two clans—the Hassanis and the Talbots—gather for a tense dinner. Alex isn’t Muslim and comes from an unconventional family; his father Bill Talbot, Peter Mackenzie, married another man, and his mother Maggie Baker, Rita Wilson, is still wary about love and commitment. Amid wedding planning, Nousha’s Uncle Saman, Maz Jobrani, arrives from Tehran; a war veteran who never married, he becomes part of the rehearsal as Maggie needs a partner for the procession, and the two hit it off.
The night before the ceremony, Nousha—showing signs of cold feet—asks Alex if they’re making a mistake. He reassures her, but the next day she panics; the wedding dress catches fire, and she extinguishes it in the pool, a dramatic moment that leaves everyone reeling.
A week later, Nousha’s friends Lynne, Rebecca Henderson, and Tessa, Aleque Reid, along with daughter Lulu, Diana DeLaCruz, show up to rally her out of her funk. A few weeks more, she uses the pretext of returning Alex’s toothbrush to attend one of his gigs; he won’t accept her apology yet, still deeply upset about being left at the altar.
Maggie and Saman—Uncle Saman from Tehran—bump into Nousha at the performance and reveal they’ve been together since the wedding and are now planning to marry. In the lead-up to the ceremony, Nousha undergoes quiet self-reflection, learning to enjoy her own company and to listen to what she truly wants.
At the backyard wedding of the Hassanis, Saman encourages Nousha to keep fighting for what she believes in. She closes the chapter with a heartfelt serenade to Alex—her voice carrying the weight of their journey—and the couple finally finds reconciliation and a new sense of possibility for their future together.
