Jefferson Steel is a Hollywood action icon whose star has long since faded, leaving him desperate for a role that might revive his flagging career. Accustomed to the high-rolling lifestyle of a leading man, he views acting as a platform for his ego rather than a craft to be honed. When his agent secures him a role in a production of King Lear at "Stratford," Jefferson allows his vanity to blind him to the details, envisioning a triumphant return to the stage at the legendary Royal Shakespeare Company in Stratford-upon-Avon.

The reality that awaits him in the English countryside, however, is far removed from the prestige he imagines. Instead of a professional theatre, he finds himself in a quiet Suffolk village, signed on to perform with the Stratford Players—a well-meaning but amateur dramatic society. The collision between Jefferson’s demanding, entitled persona and the humble, eccentric world of the village creates an immediate culture clash.
