The Room

Johnny, a successful banker, shares a townhouse in San Francisco with his fiancée Lisa. Lisa's growing disenchantment with their relationship foreshadows trouble ahead.

Lisa seduces Johnny's best friend Mark, and the two begin a secret relationship. The affair undermines the trust at the heart of Johnny's engagement.

Having overheard Lisa confessing her infidelity to her mother, Johnny attaches a tape recorder to the phone to identify the lover by listening to their conversations. He hopes to uncover the truth, but the act reveals his growing paranoia and desperation.

Johnny and Mark intervene in a street fight to rescue Denny, a neighboring college student whom Johnny supports financially and emotionally. Afterward, Denny confesses that he lusts after Lisa, and Johnny gently discourages him from pursuing her.

Lisa begins falsely claiming that Johnny has become physically abusive, fueling his depression. He turns to both Mark and their psychologist, Peter, for advice on how to cope with the turmoil.

On a rooftop, Mark confides to Peter that he feels guilty about the affair. Peter quickly deduces that the lover is Lisa, and when Mark resists, he threatens Peter by suspending him over the edge before relenting.

During a surprise birthday party for Johnny, Steven catches Lisa kissing Mark and chastises them. Lisa then claims they are expecting a child to distract Johnny, and she and Mark flaunt their affair, sparking a physical altercation that ends with Johnny ejecting everyone.

Johnny retrieves the cassette recorder and listens to the intimate phone conversation, confirming Lisa's affair. He experiences a nervous breakdown, tearing through his apartment in a destructive outburst.

Overwhelmed by betrayal, Johnny shoots himself in the mouth. The room fills with the consequences of Lisa and Mark's affair as the tragedy unfolds.

Lisa tells Mark that they are finally free to be together, but Mark rejects her, angry at her manipulation. Together with Denny, they wait by Johnny's body for the police to arrive.
