What Happens in 4bia: Full Plot Summary

The whole story of 4bia (2008) explained, from the opening scene to the final frame: every key event, every twist and what it all adds up to. Read it as a quick recap before the sequel, to check a scene you missed, or to finally understand what really happened.

Pin, a young woman restricted to her apartment due to a leg cast, relies heavily on her cell phone and text messages to maintain a connection with the outside world. She confesses to her boyfriend her deep sense of loneliness, illustrating her isolation. During the nights, Pin engages in text exchanges with a mysterious stranger who seeks her friendship and claims to be in a place he describes as "cramped" for a duration of 100 days, intriguing but strange in its own right since he can only be contacted at night. Upon sharing a photo of herself, she eagerly requests one in return, only to receive back the same image. Confused, she pushes for clarity and learns that the figure beside her in the image is a ghostly face.

As Pin delves into research about recent fatalities, she uncovers a haunting backstory: a man who had passed away was buried with a cellphone to keep in touch with his mother or to reach out whenever he felt lonely. Suddenly, she receives an alarming text from the stranger stating he is coming to her place. With the lights flickering and darkness enveloping her, terror grips Pin as she is violently attacked by the ghost, leading to her fatal fall from her window.

The narrative flashes back to reveal the tragic end of a young man who, heartbroken by a breakup communicated through a text message, decided to take his life by stepping in front of a taxi. This very incident was responsible for Pin's injury.

In another unsettling thread, a nerdy student named Ngid suffers a brutal beating at the hands of schoolmates while one of his friends, Pink, is helplessly aware but unable to intervene. Ngid, in his pain, curses his peers with a deadly charm, a curse which involves a photo of a deceased person with their eyes open. Strangely, as Ngid's spirit takes hold, disturbing occurrences begin to escalate, leading to the demise of the drug users involved. The curse does not spare Pink, despite her having not participated in the assault, as she witnessed his persecution but opted to do nothing. A police officer arrives, warning her against venturing outside just as she falls into madness, having gouged her eyes out in a desperate attempt to escape Ngid’s supernatural retribution.

Meanwhile, a group of four friends — Aey, Ter, Shin, and Phuak — embark on a river rafting adventure in the secluded jungles of Chiang Mai. Around the campfire, Aey shares an ominous prediction: should death befall him, whoever sleeps in the middle will follow. The following day, tragedy strikes when Aey is thrown from the raft and tragically lost. Despite an exhaustive search, his friends eventually accept his disappearance and set up camp for the night, tensions rising over who will sleep in the middle, ultimately settling on an arrangement that allows all to avoid it.

Later that night, as strange happenings unfold, Aey returns to the camp, raising unsettling suspicions among his friends. When Shin steps outside for a smoke, he uncovers the gruesome truth of Aey's lifeless body. The horrifying realization dawns: the four have all perished in the river's depths, yet only Aey accepted his fate, while the others stubbornly clung to the life they once had. In a bittersweet conclusion, the four friends must confront their new existence bound together as spirits.

On a different note, Pim, a flight attendant, is secretly entangled in an affair with Prince Albert of Virnistan. Tasked with piloting a charter flight carrying Princess Sophia, the prince's wife, the day unfolds into a nightmare. When Tui, her fellow stewardess, is unable to fly due to her brother's drowning (a link to the previous story), Pim finds herself alone in a precarious position. Tragedy strikes during the flight when the princess experiences a severe allergic reaction to shrimp in her meal, resulting in her untimely death.

After the royal family urgently requests the return of the princess's body for cremation, Pim is compelled to remain onboard and oversee the transport of the sole passenger, an unnerving responsibility that forces her into unsettling proximity with the enshrouded corpse. What was meant to be a routine return flight devolves into chaos as Pim’s worst fears manifest. Upon landing in the United Kingdom, an alarming discovery awaits: Pim is found deceased on the cabin floor, lying beneath the shrouded body of Princess Sophia. The tragic events intertwine their fates, emphasizing the notion that even in the air, death knows no boundaries.

4bia Plot Explained: Your Questions Answered

The questions people ask most about 4bia (2008): what happens in the confusing scenes, why the characters do what they do, the twists, hidden details and what the ending means. Each answer contains spoilers.

Q1

Why does the stranger attacking Pin text her before showing up?

The stranger in 4bia is the ghost of a man who was buried with his cellphone so he could stay in contact with his mother. After Pin sends him a photo, he reveals a ghostly face beside her in the image, signaling his supernatural presence. When he texts that he is coming to her apartment, the lights flicker and he physically manifests, ultimately causing Pin's fatal fall from her window.

Foreshadowing: Early on, Pin's research into the man buried with a cellphone already hints that her text conversations are not with a living person.

Q2

Who is the man buried with a cellphone in the first story?

He is a man who died and was buried with his phone so he could continue texting his mother whenever he felt the urge or experienced loneliness. This detail is what tips Pin off that her nightly texter may not be alive, since the stranger's behavior and claims about being in a cramped space for 100 days mirror that backstory.

  • buried with cellphone

Q3

How is Pin connected to the man who stepped in front of a taxi?

Pin's leg injury, which confines her to her apartment, was caused by that very incident. A flashback reveals that a heartbroken young man killed himself by stepping in front of a taxi after receiving a breakup text, and Pin was the pedestrian injured in the collision. Her isolation is therefore the indirect result of his death.

Q4

Why does Pink gouge out her own eyes in Ngid's story?

Pink gouges out her eyes to escape Ngid's deadly charm curse, which targets victims through photos of the deceased with their eyes open. By destroying her own eyes, she tries to deny the spirit the visual link it needs to claim her. It does not save her, and she is still found driven to madness.

Foreshadowing: The curse is established as using open-eyed portraits of the dead to identify and punish those who wronged Ngid.

Q5

How does the deadly charm curse work in the second story?

After Ngid is beaten to death, his spirit activates a charm that uses a photo of a deceased person with their eyes open as a supernatural conduit. Anyone who wronged him begins dying in escalating, gruesome circumstances, with Ngid orchestrating each death from beyond the grave until his vengeance is complete.

Q6

Why is Pink targeted by Ngid's curse if she didn't beat him?

Pink witnessed the assault on Ngid and chose to do nothing to help him. In the logic of Ngid's curse, passive complicity is treated as equivalent to active participation, so her failure to intervene marks her as a target alongside the actual attackers.

Q7

Why did all four friends drown in the river rafting story?

Although only Aey is seen being thrown from the raft, the morning after his disappearance the others discover their own dead bodies floating in the river. The twist reveals that all four actually drowned together, but only Aey accepted his death while the others kept insisting they were still alive, trapping them in a shared ghostly limbo.

Foreshadowing: Aey's campfire prediction that whoever sleeps in the middle will follow him in death sets up the rule of shared fate.

Q8

What does Aey's prediction about sleeping in the middle mean?

Aey tells his friends around the campfire that whoever sleeps in the middle of the tent will die next if he dies first. The story treats this less as a literal sleeping rule and more as a marker of shared fate, since the final revelation shows the prediction points to the four being bound together in death regardless of where they slept.

Q9

Why does Princess Sophia die from the meal on Pim's flight?

Princess Sophia suffers a severe allergic reaction to shrimp in the in-flight meal prepared for the charter. Because Pim is alone on the return leg after Tui's brother drowns and Tui is grounded, no one is available to manage the emergency properly, and the princess dies mid-flight.

Q10

Why is Pim found dead under Princess Sophia's body?

After the princess dies, Pim is ordered to escort her body back to the United Kingdom for cremation. Locked alone in the cabin with the shrouded corpse, Pim's fear escalates as the body appears to move. By the time the plane lands, Pim has also died, and her body is discovered lying beneath the princess, binding their fates together in death.

Foreshadowing: Tui being unable to fly because her brother drowned already hints that this leg of the journey is cursed for Pim.

Q11

How does Tui's brother's drowning connect to the river rafting story?

Tui's brother is one of the four friends who died during the river rafting trip in Chiang Mai. His drowning is what keeps Tui from flying the charter, which is why Pim ends up handling Princess Sophia's flight alone and ultimately dies.

Q12

How are the four stories in 4bia connected?

4bia is structured as an anthology, so each segment is mostly self-contained, but there are subtle threads tying them together. Tui's brother's drowning links the river rafting story directly to the Pim flight segment, while recurring themes of technology-driven dread, bullying, and refusal to accept death echo across all four tales.
