Jack Mosley, portrayed by Bruce Willis, is a jaded and troubled NYPD detective grappling with his own demons as he is given a critical assignment: transporting the fast-talking convict, Eddie Bunker, played by Mos Def, from his prison cell to a courthouse only 16 blocks away. As they make their way through the gritty urban landscape, Jack uncovers a shocking truth—Eddie is the key witness set to testify against corrupt members of the NYPD, including Jack’s own colleagues. With the entire force hunting down Eddie to silence him, Jack is faced with a harrowing choice between upholding the bonds of brotherhood among cops and safeguarding a man whose testimony could change everything.

Despite the immense pressure and the tragic revelation that Eddie was also going to testify against him, Jack chooses to shield him from harm. This choice leads to a series of desperate decisions, including not allowing Eddie to testify and instead taking his place on the witness stand to expose the truth.
