A devastating outbreak occurs when mad cow disease evolves into a rabid infection known as 'mad zombie disease.' The United States becomes overrun by vicious zombies, leading to chaos and fear across the country.

Two months after the outbreak, the remnants of civilization face a harsh new reality. Survivors have learned the hard way that forming attachments can lead to heartache and death, prompting many to use their hometown as their new identity.

Columbus, a college student from Austin, Texas, sets off on a journey to Columbus, Ohio, in search of his parents. He adheres to a strict set of survival guidelines that have helped him stay alive amidst the chaos around him.

On his journey, Columbus encounters Tallahassee, a violent but resourceful survivor. Though initially unfriendly, Tallahassee allows Columbus to join him on his quest, leading to a complicated but necessary partnership.

As they trek through the apocalypse, Tallahassee reveals his sentimental memories of a pet puppy named 'Buck' that the undead took from him. One of Tallahassee's main goals is to find Twinkies, causing some comic relief amid the grim reality.

The duo arrives at a grocery store where they meet Wichita and her younger sister, Little Rock. In a clever trick, the sisters stage a fake infection scenario to con Columbus and Tallahassee into giving up their weapons.

After realizing they've been duped, Columbus and Tallahassee set out to reclaim their stolen vehicle. They find themselves in a tense standoff with the sisters, but their shared struggle for survival allows them to forge a temporary alliance.

The sisters share their plans to travel to Pacific Playland, rumored to be a zombie-free amusement park in Los Angeles. Columbus decides to join them on their journey, motivated both by hope of finding family and by a growing attraction to Wichita.

Reaching Hollywood, the group visits Bill Murray's mansion, where he humorously disguises himself as a zombie. However, Columbus accidentally shoots him, mistaking him for a real zombie, which adds tension to their already complex journey.

Columbus and Wichita grow closer, but her fear of forming emotional connections complicates their budding romance. When Wichita and Little Rock sneak away the next morning, Columbus is determined to find them, showing his commitment.

At Pacific Playland, Wichita and Little Rock accidentally activate the park rides, drawing a massive horde of zombies. In a thrilling rescue, Columbus faces his fear of clowns and earns a new survival rule: 'Be a hero,' as he saves the sisters.

As the chaos settles, Wichita surprises Columbus with a kiss and reveals her true name—Krista. This moment symbolizes a significant leap in their relationship amidst the horrors and uncertainties of the world.

Leaving the amusement park behind, Columbus has an epiphany about the importance of human connections. He realizes that true living comes from forming bonds with others, leading him to appreciate the makeshift family they've created together.
