Ten years after the events of the original film, the surviving trio—Tallahassee, Columbus, Wichita, and Little Rock—have developed into proficient experts in identifying and dealing with various types of zombies, including the Homer (Dumb Zombie), Hawking (Smart Zombie), and Ninja (Silent and Deadly Zombie). They settle into the vacated White House, where Columbus chooses to propose to Wichita using the illustrious Hope Diamond. However, Tallahassee dismisses Little Rock’s aspirations of establishing her own family. The following morning, Tallahassee discovers a note left by Wichita and Little Rock, who have departed due to Little Rock feeling that Tallahassee still sees her as a child, and Wichita’s fear of becoming too engrossed with Columbus.
A month later, while scavenging through a mall, Columbus encounters Madison, a girl who has survived all on her own since she was fourteen, living in the freezer of a Pinkberry. Madison quickly begins to irritate Tallahassee, yet Columbus invites her to the White House, leading to a romantic night together. Then, upon returning to discover Columbus’ liaison with Madison, Wichita reveals that Little Rock has left for Graceland with a pacifist musician named Berkeley and alerts the group about the emergence of more agile and resilient “super zombies.” Anxious for Little Rock’s safety, they set off toward Graceland in a rickety minivan, devoid of any weapons. Tallahassee fumes about Little Rock’s relationship with Berkeley. Wichita points out that Tallahassee’s overbearing nature might be driving Little Rock away.
As they journey, the group attempts to commandeer an upscale RV—since Columbus has a firm “no clown” policy against an ice-cream truck. However, as they board the RV, the alarm blares, summoning a horde of zombies. The gang fights back as a cohesive unit, even facing one of the super-zombies that demands multiple gunshots to defeat, which prompts Columbus to dub it the “T-800,” a nod to the Terminator series. Unfortunately, Madison shows indications of “Zombification” after being bitten during the skirmish, forcing Columbus into a heartbreaking decision to lead her into the woods where he must shoot her. They come across “the Beast,” Tallahassee’s personalized presidential limousine, which has been swiped by Little Rock, at an Elvis-themed motel where they meet Nevada. After bonding over their mutual admiration for Elvis, Tallahassee and Nevada spend the night together.
Upon awakening, they discover that the Beast has been crushed by a monster truck driven by Albuquerque and Flagstaff, two individuals who bear a striking resemblance to Tallahassee and Columbus. When super-zombies invade, Albuquerque explains they turned back from heading west due to overwhelming hordes of super zombies pushing eastward. Facing off against these menacing zombies, Albuquerque and Flagstaff are ultimately bitten, transforming into zombies themselves and meeting their unfortunate demises. As the group prepares to leave, they reminisce about “Murrayed,” a term denoting shooting someone because you believe they’re a zombie, explaining how Bill Murray lost his life.
As they venture forth, they spot Madison alive and driving the clown-themed ice-cream truck, revealing that her earlier symptoms of Zombification resulted from a nut allergy, not an actual transformation. Reunited, the group arrives at Babylon, a hippie commune, where they must relinquish their weapons to find Little Rock. A relieved Tallahassee is happy to see Little Rock safe but quickly discovers a looming threat as a swarm of super zombies descends upon the commune drawn by the fireworks. Faced with a dire situation, Tallahassee concocts a daring plan to lure the zombies away using exploding bio-diesel, while the commune members wield barricade shields to funnel the zombies off a skyscraper, with Tallahassee himself acting as bait.
As the flood of zombies proves more significant than anticipated, the group becomes surrounded. Just when hopes seem bleak, Nevada arrives heroically in Albuquerque’s monster truck to rescue them, although the vehicle soon topples over. The survivors escape to the upper floors of the building, corralling the zombies toward the roof. Tallahassee skillfully swings just out of reach of the zombies using a construction crane hook, but the last two manage to grab onto his leg, only for Little Rock to save him by shooting them. This leads to a heartfelt reconciliation between the two. In a touching moment, Wichita finally accepts Columbus’ marriage proposal. Shortly after, Little Rock parts ways with Berkeley, while he finds companionship with Madison. The group leaves the commune together, finally feeling they have discovered their true home in one another.
As an amusing side note, in a mid-credits scene, Bill Murray is seen during the initial onset of the zombie outbreak while promoting another installment of the Garfield series, cleverly escaping while dispatching numerous zombies. In a humorous post-credits moment, he is shown earlier rehearsing how to cough up a hairball for the interview.
