Zero Effect

Daryl Zero is the world's greatest detective, but a socially maladroit misanthrope. He never meets clients directly, instead working through his assistant Steve Arlo. He narrates the story by reading lines from his proposed autobiography. His objectivity is challenged when he becomes emotionally involved with Gloria, revealing a hidden vulnerability behind his cool facade.

Steve Arlo is Zero's practical, loyal assistant and the primary conduit to clients. He handles the detective's schedules and coordinates his demanding requirements. The tension between keeping Zero on task and maintaining his own life with Jess drives much of the conflict. He balances loyalty to Zero with the pressures of the case.

Gloria Sullivan is an EMT with a mysterious past who becomes entangled with Zero. She attracts Zero's attention, which compromises his usual objectivity. Her backstory reveals Stark's abuse and the chain of events that leads to the blackmail. She orchestrates the payoff and, with Zero's help, flees the country.

Gregory Stark is a Portland area millionaire who uses wealth to manipulate others. He pressures Arlo to reveal the blackmailer, and his past crimes come to light. His act of brutality is revealed through the revelation that he raped Gloria's mother. In the climactic moment, he collapses from a heart attack and Gloria saves him as she escapes with Zero's assistance.

Jess is Steve Arlo's girlfriend and a counterpoint to Zero's detached approach. Her relationship with Arlo becomes strained as Zero's demands intrude on their life. She embodies the normal life that is threatened by the detective's obsession.
