Read the complete plot breakdown of You’ve Got This (2020), including all key story events, major twists, and the ending explained in detail. Discover what really happened—and what it all means.

This is the story of Alejandro and Ceci, a married couple living in Mexico. Ceci is a driven career woman, focused on her work and utterly uninterested in having kids, while Alejandro longs for a family and eagerly hopes for a child to share their future.

One day, Alejandro urges Ceci to consider starting a family soon, but she remains firm. She has just been offered a partnership at the firm—a rare and highly celebrated promotion for a woman—and she is genuinely excited about the new step in her career.

Later, as Alejandro walks down the street, he meets a waitress who asks for help with her baby, Alan. He promises to assist if she ever needs it and, after a moment of hesitation, agrees to take Alan for three days so she can attend to something important. He brings the baby home, trying to avoid Ceci discovering Alan, but his plan backfires and Ceci reacts with anger, insisting that he return the child to his mother as quickly as possible.

When the day for Alan’s mother to return arrives comes and goes, Alejandro begins a search to locate her. After a few days, a friend informs him that she has returned. He brings Alan back to her, only to learn that she had been undergoing brain cancer treatment while away. She asks him to consider adopting Alan, but he refuses. As he prepares to leave, she faints, and out of a sense of compassion Alejandro brings both the woman and the baby back to their home. Ceci arrives just in time to hear him tell Alan’s mother that she can stay with them.

A heated confrontation follows. Alejandro breaks down, admitting that his marriage to Ceci was largely about having a child with her. Ceci, hurt and conflicted, leaves and goes to a friend’s house with the intention of thinking over the life they might have had. The two begin a pattern of missed calls and mounting distance. When Ceci finally answers one call, she asks him not to be home when she comes to collect her things, signaling a potential break.

Over the next days, Alejandro continues to pursue contact and a path forward, while Ceci remains distant. He makes plans to adopt Alan and to move in with his mother. He even takes Alan to work—an act that violates office policy and leads to his firing. The next morning, he returns to the office to apologize and to challenge the way his employer has treated the situation, proposing ideas for how management could better support employees. The manager rejects the suggestions but hints at a possible return.

Meanwhile, Ceci and Alejandro cross paths again at a major meeting where Ceci is attending for her promotion. They reconcile in the moment, but the plot takes a larger turn when Alejando receives a call that Alan’s mother has been admitted to the hospital. Ceci asks the CEO if she can go to the hospital immediately to support her husband, but the CEO says the formality of the promotion has already been completed and that she should sign the papers first. She signs and the couple heads to the hospital.

Tragically, Alan’s mother dies, and Ceci and Alejandro proceed to adopt Alan. The film closes with Ceci preparing to depart for Hong Kong, Alan asleep in the next room, and Alejandro teasing about joining her. Ceci is moved and asks him not to joke about such things, while Alejandro reveals plane tickets to Hong Kong and confirms that he and Alan will accompany her on this new journey.
