Awakening in Ur

The film opens with the ruins of Ur and a narration detailing a local legend about a great monster named Daimon. A dormant monster lies beneath the rubble until treasure hunters disturb the site. Daimon is roused and destroys the intruders by causing a landslide.

Daimon arrives in Japan

After his release, Daimon travels to Japan to seek out new victims. He lands in the country and begins hunting, killing the samurai Hyogo Isobe and drinking his blood. He then uses Isobe's body to approach Isobe's house.

Isobe's house and the altars

Daimon, inhabiting Isobe's form, enters Isobe's house where Lady Chie and Shinpachiro Mayama greet him. He kills the family dog for barking, tears down all altars, and orders them burned. A garden ornament is tossed into a pond, rousing a kappa.

The kappa takes notice

The kappa witnesses Daimon's vampiric act, seeing him drink Saheiji Kawano's blood and adopt Isobe's mannerisms. The kappa suspects a supernatural impostor and attacks Daimon, but fails. It then travels to the woods to recruit other yōkai to fight Daimon.

The yokai council forms

In the forest, the yōkai Kasa-obake, Futakuchi-onna, Rokurokubi, Nuppeppō, and Abura-sumashi debate the kappa's claim. They dismiss the possibility of such a monster, citing field guides and a coloring book, and agree to help only if proven wrong.

Shinobu's fate and the priest's warning

Lady Chie and Shinpachiro discover Shinobu has fallen victim to Daimon's vampirism. Shinpachiro seeks guidance from his uncle, a priest, who declares Isobe dead and that a demon is masquerading as him. The priest gives three candles and chants destruction prayers to trap the demon.

The priest's ritual is reversed

Daimon reverses the priest's destruction magic and kills the priest. He declares a thirst for younger blood and goes out to find children with his retainers. He heads into the countryside to target a local family.

The family is attacked

The demon's entourage attacks a local family; the parents manage to slip their children out the back door. The parents are killed, and the retainers search the area for the children. The yokai, having set up at a nearby shrine, decide to intervene after hearing of the attack.

A plan to defend the homeland

With the children safe, the yokai realize their error and pledge to drive Daimon away. They assemble at a shrine-turned-cacophony of monsters and prepare for an assault on the demon.

First yokai assault and the warded jar

The yokai attack Daimon, but Rokurokubi's neck attack is thwarted as Daimon binds her neck in a knot. Shinpachiro uses a warded jar to trap the demon and the yokai, which backfires and traps the yokai too. Shinpachiro fires at Daimon, hitting him in the eye and forcing him to flee from Isobe's body.

Daimon possesses Ohdate

Daimon escapes by drinking the blood of the magistrate-to-be Ohdate and takes his body. He returns to the house, now inhabiting Ohdate, and resumes his control. The remaining yokai are still trapped inside the warded jar.

The freed yokai warn Shinpachiro

Futakuchi-onna and Kasa-obake break free, encounter the warded jar, and warn Shinpachiro about Saheiji. They reunite with the others at the house as Daimon, in Ohdate's body, orders Shinpachiro's execution. The ward continues to contain the others.

Ward is released and the final stand

The yokai persuade Lady Chie to remove the ward, freeing all the trapped yōkai. Daimon responds by creating multiple clones to match their numbers. The final confrontation pits the demon against the united yokai army.

The eye strike and Daimon falls

The yokai realize their only chance is to strike Daimon's remaining eye. Nuppeppō and Kasa-obake coordinate a strike to his eye, lifting and guiding the blow. They stab Daimon, shattering his form and defeating him.

Aftermath and peace

With Daimon defeated, Shinpachiro is released from captivity. The yokai return to their natural habitats, having defended their home from the invasion. The village settles back into peace as the yokai resume their lives.
