Vasu Dhanush is a youth from a middle-class family who keeps knocking on doors for jobs, only to be turned away time and again because of his poor English and limited educational qualifications. His struggle to find steady work casts a shadow over his friendships and his relationship with his father, a dedicated teacher who never hides his disappointment in his son. Across town, his two faithful companions—Cheenu Karthik Kumar and Ganesh Karunas—stand by him, trying to keep his spirits from sinking. The weight of parental expectations presses hard, and Vasu finds it increasingly difficult to meet them, a strain that becomes part of the fabric of his daily life.

Then comes Keerthi Nayanthara, a striking young woman who works for a software solutions firm. The moment Vasu spots her, a spark of love lights up his world, and he clings to the hope that he might win her heart. After several hopeful interviews, he lands a job at the same firm, a small victory that makes his days feel a little less heavy. But Keerthi is not the easy, uncomplicated partner he imagines. She is short-tempered and traditional, and she comes from an Orthodox family. On a business trip abroad to Australia with a small team, Vasu gathers the courage to confess his love. Her response is blunt and disheartening: she refuses him because her marriage has already been arranged with her uncle’s son, a binding decision that seems to seal Vasu’s fate.

Back home, grief and frustration take their toll. Vasu’s father, who had hoped to see his son on a different path, is pushed to the edge by his son’s heartbreak and by Keerthi’s harsh rejection of his family’s concerns. When Vasu’s father confronts Keerthi, she lashes out, reprimanding him for meddling in his son’s life and even slapping him. The confrontation devastates the household, and later that night, Vasu’s father collapses, dying of a heart attack. Seeking to lift his mood, Cheenu invites Vasu to retreat with his family to the countryside. Travel on a train brings a startling revelation: Keerthi is Cheenu’s fiancée, a twist that complicates the emotional landscape for all involved. Cheenu’s grandfather had hoped to wed them off, maintaining the family’s tradition and harmony, but Keerthi and Cheenu decide to carve out their own identities beyond the older generation’s plans. This revelation casts a pall over the family’s old expectations and leaves the grandfather dealing with a new, unsettled dynamic.

As days pass, the parents of Keerthi and Cheenu hatch a plan to unite the two young people by marriage to appease the grandfather, whose priority is to preserve the family’s honor and long-standing customs. Yet love begins to rewrite the script. Keerthi discovers that her feelings for Vasu are deeper than she admitted, and Vasu himself is torn between his own happiness and protecting the peace of the families who have supported him through years of hardship. Soon, the rest of Cheenu and Keerthi’s relatives come to stay with Vasu for a time, sensing that the family bond still contains the seeds of reconciliation. Yet the grandfather remains wary, stubbornly refusing to step into the house and to forgive the past. He admits he needs more time to change and to understand that true happiness may lie beyond strict tradition. In the end, a hopeful turning point emerges: Vasu and Keerthi, after navigating a maze of misunderstandings and heartache, find their place as a couple who can envision a life together, even if their path is not simple.
