In the remote outback of North West Australia, patrol officers Gary Bulmer and Brian O'Connor are trying to meet their speeding ticket quota. They spot Mick Taylor driving past and decide to pull him over, claiming he was speeding despite him adhering to the limit.

During the traffic stop, Bulmer and O'Connor belittle Mick and issue him a speeding ticket. They also order him to get rid of his truck, provoking Mick's anger and setting the stage for violent retribution.

After the traffic stop, Mick retaliates fiercely by shooting O'Connor in the head as the officers drive away. The car crashes into a gully, and in a gruesome act, Mick breaks Bulmer's leg and stabs him before setting the car ablaze.

Meanwhile, young travelers Rutger and Katarina set up camp near the Wolf Creek Crater. Their peaceful night is shattered when Mick arrives offering them a lift, which they decline, provoking his violent outburst.

Angry at their rejection, Mick stabs Rutger in the back and ties up Katarina. He prepares to assault her as Rutger, despite his injuries, attempts to fight back but is ultimately overpowered and brutally decapitated by Mick.

With Rutger dead, Mick tells Katarina they will spend a long time together, indicating his sinister intentions. After strangling her until she loses consciousness, he begins to dismember Rutger's body, using it to feed his dogs.

Katarina wakes up to find Mick cutting up Rutger's body and escapes into the bush. Mick pursues her while she tries to evade his grasp, turning their encounter into a horrifying game of cat and mouse.

English tourist Paul Hammersmith inadvertently becomes involved when he stops to help Katarina, who is standing on the road. Unbeknownst to him, Mick is in close pursuit, leading to dire consequences.

In a chaotic moment, Mick fires at Paul, but the bullet finds Katarina instead, killing her instantly. Grief-stricken and terrified, Paul drives away, leaving her body behind as dawn breaks.

Realizing he is low on fuel, Paul tries to flag down help only to find that Mick has claimed the truck driver’s life. A tense chase ensues, resulting in Paul’s vehicle rolling down a steep hillside.

After surviving the crash, Paul encounters a kind elderly couple who offer him food and shelter, planning to drive him to the nearest town. However, their kindness is fatal as Mick tracks them down and kills them.

Mick captures Paul and chains him in a dungeon, preparing to inflict psychological and physical torture. Paul uses his wit and charm to stave off the worst, engaging Mick in songs and quizzes about Australia.

As Mick's quiz progresses, the stakes become deadly. For every wrong answer, Paul loses a finger, but he employs clever tactics to manipulate Mick, attempting to gain his freedom in the chaos.

After a brutal confrontation, Paul manages to escape through the tunnels of the dungeon, encountering the remains of previous victims. He struggles for survival as Mick closes in unrelentingly.

Paul finally emerges from the dungeon, badly wounded and disoriented. Before he can find help, he discovers he has been labeled a suspect in unsolved murders, leading to his deportation and mental breakdown.
