Georg, along with his wife Anna and their son Georgie, embark on a trip to their serene lakeside summer home. As they make the journey, Georg engages in a light-hearted guessing game regarding the opera singer Anna is fond of, mistakenly suggesting Gigli, but struggling to identify the melody, which he claims resembles that of Handel. To which Anna playfully responds, claiming victory with a score of 3-2 in her favor.
Upon their arrival, the family is greeted by their peculiar neighbors, who seem perturbed by the couple practicing their golf skills ahead of a scheduled game set for 10 AM the following day. The atmosphere is tense yet awkward, particularly with the introduction of two young men from the neighbor’s household. Anna politely inquires if they would assist in launching their boat in about twenty minutes, to which one of the neighbors agrees, though his demeanor suggests he is not entirely pleased. As Georgie retreats upstairs to stow his bags, accompanied by their loyal German Shepherd, Rolfi, Georg brings in his golf clubs and a pair of grocery boxes.
Chaos ensues in the kitchen as Rolfi attempts to snatch food meant for the family, prompting Georg to take him outside for a moment. Unexpectedly, Fred, a neighbor, appears at their gate alongside one of the young men, whose name turns out to be Paul. Fred notes that Paul is the son of a business associate. Soon, their son Georgie curiously asks Fred about Tropea, Italy—a place his friend Sissi had claimed she would visit during the summer. Tension mounts as Georg and Georgie prepare their boat, and Georgie questions Fred’s unusual behavior earlier.
While Anna is busy preparing dinner, she finds herself interrupted by an unexpected visitor, Peter, who claims to need four eggs for his mother, Eva. A miscommunication regarding the shared gate leads to a mess in the kitchen, and Anna grows increasingly frustrated when Peter accidentally damages her phone. As Peter leaves, he returns with Paul, both of whom seem to have ulterior motives. Paul, with his brash attitude, toys with Georg’s golf clubs, creating an unsettling atmosphere.
As the evening progresses, Georg becomes aware of a sinister game unfolding, orchestrated by Paul and Peter. The young men’s intentions grow increasingly violent, leading to a harrowing series of events where Georg finds himself fighting not only for his family’s safety but for their very lives. With a chilling sense of foreboding, Paul taunts Anna and Georgie, forcing them into dangerous games that threaten to unravel their family.
“I want to bet the family will be dead by 9 AM tomorrow,” Paul declares, breaking the fourth wall and placing the audience in a position to ponder their odds.
As the situation spirals out of control, Georgie’s desperate attempts to escape lead him into a dire confrontation with Paul, revealing the depths of menace lurking behind their charming summer retreat. With tensions at a breaking point and each family member pushed to their limits, Anna’s wit and resilience are tested in unimaginable ways.
In a shocking culmination of treachery and desperation, Anna’s fight for survival culminates in a choice between loyalty and self-preservation, with the haunting question of whether they can escape the clutches of their tormentors before it’s too late.
Ultimately, in a gripping and dramatic climax, the twisted demands of Paul and Peter leave the family at the mercy of a dark fate, challenging their bond and testing their humanity as they confront the nightmarish reality of their summer retreat gone tragically awry.
