Wish of the Fairy Fish

Emelya made his first two wishes impulsively and without serious thought. His first wish was playful, he wanted to see the city but was too lazy to leave his beloved stove, so the Pike made the stove walk to town. His second wish was equally whimsical: he wanted summer in the middle of winter, simply because he craved warmth and wanted to enjoy pleasant weather. These wishes demonstrated his mischievous, carefree nature rather than any strategic thinking about his future.

The wasteful wishes set up the story's theme: true accomplishments come from Emelya's own cleverness, not magical shortcuts.

Emelya used his third wish to restore his father's sight, not to win Princess Anfisa. During his journey to obtain a blessing from the Other World, he visited his blind father and chose to use the wish to cure his blindness, a personal act of love and sacrifice rather than pursuing his original plan to win the princess through magical assistance.

This selfless act distinguishes Emelya from characters like Anfisa who pursue power at any cost.

Vasilisa is actually the daughter of Koshchei the Deathless, a legendary figure from Russian folklore. She was formerly the Magic Pike that Emelya caught. After granting her freedom, she took human form as Vasilisa the Beautiful and accompanied Emelya on his quests. Her true identity is revealed when Emelya travels to the Other World and meets Koshchei himself.

Earlier hints include the Pike's unusual knowledge and power, and Vasilisa's ability to escape the Water King multiple times.

Anfisa learns through witchcraft that Emelya's successful quests, the accordion from Bayun, the magical tablecloth, and his journey to the Other World, were accomplished with magical assistance from Vasilisa. Feeling deceived that a common fool could only succeed through supernatural help rather than his own merits, Anfisa condemns him to execution, viewing his achievements as unfairly obtained.

Earlier court scenes show Anfisa is ambitious and values status; her reaction reveals she wanted Emelya to succeed through genuine merit, not magic.

At the end, Anfisa attempts to gain magical powers for herself by transforming into a pike, hoping to become a sorceress. However, her powers prove limited, she can only grant others' wishes, not fulfill her own ambitions. The Water King (Vodovik), mistaking her for Vasilisa due to her pike form, emerges through a well and claims her, taking her away to his underwater realm.

Anfisa's earlier ambition to become queen and her jealousy of Vasilisa's magical abilities foreshadow her desperate attempt at transformation.

When Koshchei releases Emelya and Vasilisa from the Other World, the magic of that realm causes them to forget most of what happened there, including Vasilisa's true identity as Koshchei's daughter. This enchantment causes Emelya to return to the city with dimmed memories, unaware of the full truth about Vasilisa's background.

The Other World operates under different rules; the memory loss explains why Emelya doesn't immediately recognize Vasilisa's significance.

Emelya and Vasilisa obtained the self-assembling tablecloth from two gluttonous prisoners in the Stone City who had become too fat to move due to their endless eating and drinking. Using spring water that reveals the truth, they exposed the men's greed and forced them to release the tablecloth. The tablecloth could produce infinite food, which was part of the test set by Anfisa's mother Agrippina.

Earlier setup shows Agrippina testing Emelya with seemingly impossible tasks to determine his worthiness.

The Water King Vodovik seeks the Magic Pike because the Pike is bound to a submerged, magical world. As the ruler of underwater realms, Vodovik considers the Pike his property and wants to reclaim it. Throughout the story, he pursues Vasilisa (the Pike's human form) multiple times, eventually capturing Anfisa when she transforms into a pike, mistaking her for his escaped subject.

The opening scene establishes the Water King as a threat who has been searching for the Pike.

Emelya realizes his true love is Vasilisa, not Princess Anfisa. After Anfisa is taken by the Water King and the court is restored, Emelya chooses to be with Vasilisa instead of pursuing political power. They depart together on a journey, their bond having been tested through magical trials and personal growth, proving their love stronger than ambition or enchantment.

Their partnership develops throughout the quests; Vasilisa consistently helps Emelya, and he increasingly relies on her wisdom.

Agrippina is the queen mother who tests Emelya's worthiness to marry Anfisa. She devises difficult tasks, including retrieving the magical tablecloth and obtaining a blessing from the Other World. In the Other World, she cruelly refuses to give her blessing until subjected to extreme hunger, only relenting when witnessed by Tsar Feofan through a magical tray. Her actions drive much of the plot's conflict.

Agrippina's testing of Emelya establishes her as a gatekeeper figure throughout the narrative.
