In ancient Russia, a simple man named Emelya the Fool, the son of a blind blacksmith, lives a modest, unassuming life and spends his days wandering near rivers and streams, chasing a quiet slice of luck. Emelya Nikita Kologrivyy is more than a rustic folk hero; he possesses a charm and a stubborn streak that keep him one step ahead of trouble, even when fate seems to wheel him toward it. One day, while out fishing, he pulls from an icy hole a remarkable Magic Pike, a creature bound to a distant, submerged world and sought after by the underground Water King, Vodovik Egor Bakulin. The Pike, with a voice of water and wind, promises to grant three wishes in exchange for its freedom.

The first wish is playful and impractical: Emelya wants to see the city, yet he cannot bear to rise from his beloved stove. The Magic Pike compels the stove itself to march to the bustling town, bridging the gap between a stove‑loving peasant and a world of clamor and possibility. Next, in a bold stroke of whimsy, Emelya wishes for summer to bloom in the middle of winter. The Pike fulfills this enchanting reversal of the seasons, painting the snow with radiant heat and long days. Yet as Emelya basks in his mischief, danger lurks—the robbers who have been sniffing around him discover that there is nothing of value to claim, yet they know the Magic Pike’s power remains a lure. A chase ensues, and in the chaos Emelya tries to discard the Pike into the river, but the consequences swing back with a cruel twist: he ends up captured and hung upside down from a tree.

From the depths of magic, the Pike, who has transformed into a luminous girl named Vasilisa the Beautiful Mila Ershova, frees him. With her help, Emelya retrieves his third wish, weighing what to ask for next. He Eyes a prize that would not only change his life but also test the limits of his cunning—a match with Princess Anfisa Alina Alekseeva, daughter of Tsar Feofan Roman Madyanov. Anfisa herself is caught between duty and desire, and the Tsar’s court becomes a stage for a modern spectacle: the English ambassador, Lord Rotman Yuri Kolokolnikov, and a gleaming mechanical organ (really a contraption of a mysterious dwarf inside) that outshines a self‑playing accordion in the royal imagination. The bold Emelya volunteers to win Anfisa’s hand, promising the marriage as a reward, and with Vasilisa’s otherworldly support he begins a quest to secure the heart of the princess.

To win over Anfisa, Emelya must outwit the cat Bayun, the sly keeper of a button accordion whose music can lull and devour the unwary. Bayun, a cunning creature, eventually yields to Emelya’s determination and joins him in his mission. The path is filled with tests, and the couple’s fortune hinges on a magical tablecloth whose creators are two rotund men—one always drinking, the other always eating. The tablecloth grants infinite feasts and endless abundance, yet its true price is a trap that only Emelya and Vasilisa can untangle. After a long struggle, they reclaim the cloth with the help of spring water that reflects back the truth of those who gaze upon it, shaming the two indulgent men enough to release the magical object into Emelya’s hands. The pair return to the city, where the Tsar recognizes Emelya’s cleverness and now must decide whether to bless the couple’s union.

Agrippina the Queen [Agrippina Steklova], mother of Anfisa, weighs in with advice that tests Emelya’s resolve: to win in the Other World and gain the blessing of Anfisa’s mother, he must fetch a blessing from beyond. On a journey that takes him to his own father, Emelya makes a final, heartfelt wish—to restore his father’s sight. He frees Vasilisa, who has revealed her true nature and is now more than a mere magical companion; she is a companion who walks by his side into the unknown. In the Other World, Emelya discovers that Vasilisa is Koshchei’s daughter Fyodor Lavrov. The encounter with Koshchei is a test of wit and will; Agrippina’s hunger, a cruel aid in a world of temptations, adds to the tension, and the moment of revelation comes when a tray seems to reflect the truth of what has been earned and what has been hidden.

Koshchei releases Emelya and Vasilisa, yet the memory of their time in that other realm fades from Emelya’s mind. He returns to the earthly city, but Anfisa, upon learning of the feats Emelya accomplished with help from unseen forces, seeks to condemn him. The story pivots on a daring counter-move: Vasilisa escapes once again from the Sea King Vodovik and appears in the mortal world in human form, offering her service for Emelya’s life. Anfisa agrees to this strange bargain, her own ambitions penned into a new future—she vows to become queen, arrange a wedding with the English king, and appoint Lord Rotman as a dishwasher as part of a broader, farcical plan.

Emelya returns to his old life and his father, who has sheltered two peculiar men, one thin in drinking and the other thin in eating, a reminder of the balance between excess and need in a world of magic. It is then that Emelya remembers Vasilisa and realizes that his love for her transcends titles and the trappings of power. The four of them—Emelya, Vasilisa, the father, and their companions—arrive in the city to demand her release, challenging Anfisa’s schemes. In a final twist, Anfisa attempts to seize control by becoming a sorceress herself, turning into a pike once more. But her new powers prove hollow, for the Water King reasserts his dominion and takes Anfisa away through the well, leaving Feofan to return the throne to his rightful hand.

With the court restored, Emelya and Vasilisa set off on a journey, their bond proven stronger than any enchantment or political intrigue. The tale blends humor, magic, and a stubborn faith in love, painting a world where wit and courage can bend the fates themselves, even as old powers resist and new allegiances form in the glow of an unlikely, enduring partnership.
