In Kansas, a young girl named Dorothy Gale lives on a farm with Aunt Em, Uncle Henry, and her dog Toto. One day, while the adults are away, a tornado lifts their house into the air and carries it to the magical land of Oz. Dorothy and Toto tumble into a world of vibrant color and unfamiliar sounds, where they are welcomed by the cheerful Munchkins and greeted by the The Good Witch of the North. The Witch explains that Dorothy’s house landed on the Wicked Witch of the East, freeing the Munchkins from her tyranny, and she gifts Dorothy the ruby slippers that will prove essential on the road ahead. Yet Dorothy longs to return home. After consulting a magical blackboard, the Witch advises that the best chance to make it home lies with the great The Wizard of Oz, who presides over the Emerald City. Before parting, the Witch warns Dorothy to stay on the yellow brick road and leaves a protective mark on her forehead with a kiss.

With the road ahead, Dorothy is joined by three companions who hope the Wizard can fulfill their own desires: a brainless Scarecrow, a rusted Tin Woodman who longs for a heart, and a Cowardly Lion seeking courage. The unlikely quartet becomes a tight-knit circle, and together they pledge to help each other reach the Wizard and obtain what they seek. Their journey is not without peril. Midway, they face a Kalidah — a creature that is part tiger and part bear — and barely escape its claws. They cross a river by raft and press on toward the shimmering gates of the Emerald City, where the Wizard will meet them in a series of puzzling, dreamlike appearances.

Within the city, the Wizard appears to each traveler in a different, fantastical form: to Dorothy as a large talking head, to the Scarecrow as a beautiful winged lady, to the Tin Woodman as a rhinoceros-like monster, and to the Cowardly Lion as a ball of fire. He offers to grant their deepest wishes, but only if they first defeat the Wicked Witch of the West. The group accepts the challenge, driven by a mix of hope and fear, and heads toward the Witch’s domain in the western reaches of the land.

Back at the Witch’s fortress, the Wicked Witch of the West learns of their arrival through her crystal ball and makes a series of frightful attempts to stop them. She dispatches wolves that the Tin Woodman fends off, then sends a flock of crows that transform into a monstrous giant crow, only to be foiled by the Scarecrow’s cunning. Her next weapon is an army of Winged Monkeys, who manage to capture the travelers but spare Dorothy, protected by the North Witch’s mark. In a final bid for Dorothy’s slippers, the Witch tries to steal them; during the struggle, a splash of water on her precipitates a dramatic shrinking and she vanishes forever.

With the Witch defeated, the Winkies are freed from oppression, and the friends return to the Emerald City to learn the truth about the Wizard. The revelation is sobering: the Wizard is not a formidable sorcerer at all but a humbug — a former circus magician whose hot-air balloon brought him to Oz by accident. He admits that Dorothy and her friends already possess what they sought, and while he offers to escort Dorothy home by balloon, a mishap prevents the trip at that moment. Still, the group gains a sense of closure as Glinda, the Good Witch of the South, arrives to set things straight. She explains that Dorothy has always had the power to return home with the ruby slippers. Empowered by this knowledge, Dorothy says goodbye to her friends, clicks the heels of the slippers three times, and, with Toto by her side, is suddenly transported back to Kansas, where she is joyfully reunited with Aunt Em and Uncle Henry.

This retelling stays faithful to the story’s core beats while weaving in richer, more descriptive moments that emphasize friendship, perseverance, and the comforting idea that home is never truly out of reach. The journey remains a timeless exploration of self-discovery, courage, and the bonds that help us navigate the unknown.
