Tolwyn recalls the Terran fleet to defend Earth and assigns Lieutenant Christopher Blair a critical courier mission. Blair is to carry the orders to the carrier TCS Tiger Claw in the Vega Sector and stage a delaying action to buy Earth's time. The mission hints at Blair’s Pilgrim heritage, which may aid him in the mission.

Blair and Marshall travel aboard the Diligent toward Tiger Claw when a gravity well pulls the supply ship off course and strips it of navigation.
