What Happens in When Tomorrow Comes: Full Plot Summary

The whole story of When Tomorrow Comes (1939) explained, from the opening scene to the final frame: every key event, every twist and what it all adds up to. Read it as a quick recap before the sequel, to check a scene you missed, or to finally understand what really happened.

Phillipe Andre Pierre Chagal is a renowned concert pianist who enters a restaurant where Helen works as a waitress. He is instantly drawn to her, and he accompanies her to a union rally, where her bold, left-wing views surface as she suggests that every union member go on strike. After the meeting, he praises her speech and leadership, even though he is secretly anti-union, and the pair quickly fall in love.

On a date in Long Island, the couple relax on his boat as a storm brews overhead. They disembark and seek shelter at his summer home, but the weather intensifies into a hurricane. Helen and Phillipe share a kiss and try to leave for the nearest town, eventually spending the night in a church. When Helen later discovers that Phillipe is married, she quietly leaves for the mainland. Phillipe attempts to apologize and win her back by introducing her to his wife Madeleine. Helen hesitates, and Madeleine reveals she is heartbroken and guilty about a stillbirth she and Phillipe mourn five years later. Despite their continued love for the pianist, Helen ends the relationship.

Why does Philip try to introduce Helen to his wife Madeline?

Philip hopes that by bringing Helen face-to-face with Madeline, the situation will resolve itself - either Helen will accept being his mistress or Madeline will agree to a divorce. It's a clumsy attempt to have both women in his life without fully committing to either choice. The meeting backfires when Madeline's emotional revelation changes everything.

Foreshadowing: Philip's contradictory nature (anti-union yet praising Helen) shows his tendency to avoid difficult decisions.
