In the remote moorlands of Yorkshire, the aging, weathered walls of Blackshaw Towers become the stage for a tense family gathering. The relatives of Gabriel Broughton are summoned to hear the reading of his will, and the mood is as gloomy as the stormy sky that looms over the estate. Among them is Ernest Broughton, who arrives with his loyal but somewhat uneasy flatmate, Syd Butler. Their presence signals that old family tensions are about to surface, and a sense of unease settles over the grand but decaying mansion.

Inside, a curious assembly gathers: Guy Broughton and his sister Janet Broughton, their father Dr. Edward Broughton, and Aunt Emily, a dotty old woman convinced the First World War is still ongoing. Linda Dickson, Gabriel’s nurse, moves through the corridors with an air of amusement at the suspicious fortune that awaits them all. Malcolm Broughton, a showy piano player, pokes fun at the idea that anyone is sane in this place, whispering that the family is “quite mad.” The arrival of the solicitor, Everett Sloane, marks the formal beginning of the will reading, but the documents reveal a shocking twist: the relatives inherit nothing, save Linda, who is left Gabriel’s medicines and syringe. The room fills with a mix of disbelief, fear, and simmering resentment as the truth sinks in.

The power flickers and dies, plunging the mansion into darkness. Ernest and Syd follow Fisk, the quiet butler, outside in a bid to fix the problem, only to return and discover the body of Dr. Broughton. Syd suspects foul play, but when he attempts to call the police, he finds that the line has been severed. With the old house cut off from the world, the solicitor advises everyone to secure their rooms and ride out the night. In the shadowed hall, a fraught sequence unfolds: Ernest mistakenly enters Linda’s room, where she coldly proposes he stay the night, only to be met with his discomfort and retreat. Syd, ever practical, stays by Ernest’s side, determined to prove his innocence.

As the night deepens, danger escalates. While Ernest steps away to use the toilet, a shadowy assailant attempts to stab Syd in his sleep but backs off when discovered. Ernest, anxious yet stubborn, sits at the organ and tries to calm the room with a tune, first playing a light, playful “Chopsticks” that turns into a duet with Malcolm—before Malcolm is suddenly stabbed in the back. The room erupts in panic, but Sloane insists the door must be locked from the inside, keeping the killer among them. Syd refuses to surrender to fear and remains by Ernest, convinced they’re not faced with a straightforward murder. The pair stumble upon a hidden passage, a crucial clue that suggests someone could leave the locked room unseen, turning the house into a maze of secrecy.

The survivors retreat to the lounge, seeking safety together, but their fragile truce is shattered when Janet is struck by a poison-tipped dart, fired from behind a painting on the wall. Suspicion immediately falls on Fisk, who was not present at the moment, though he has a tight alibi. Sloane volunteers to fetch the police from the village, but upon returning with the others, Emily stays behind and claims she spoke to Gabriel, stirring more questions than answers. The group checks the coffin where Gabriel’s body should lie, only to find it empty when Ernest later insists he saw him again. A second secret passage leads to another empty resting place, and then Guy disappears, his small pistol still in his possession adding to the mounting paranoia.

When the town’s police inspector Arkwright finally arrives, the skepticism about a string of murders is strong, especially since no bodies are visible. Yet the case twists once more when Guy’s body is found, and soon after, Sloane’s corpse is discovered in a fountain, proving that the supposed alibi and the messenger were not what they seemed. The inspector’s suspicions take a jarring turn as Gabriel, somehow in disguise, seizes control with Guy’s pistol and turns the tense night into a violent trap for the entire group.

Gabriel’s motive emerges in a chilling confession: years of being bled dry by relatives who exploited him, and a growing anger at how they treated him. He traps the remaining captives in the manor, setting their mouths to silence with starving dogs that, in fact, pose no real danger thanks to Fisk’s careful provisioning. A dramatic misfire when Gabriel attempts to shoot Fisk instead triggers a lethal chandelier trap that fells him instead. The dogs, previously fed by Fisk, are revealed to be harmless in the moment. By dawn, the life that remains for earnest Ernest is not an end to this web of revenge but a bitter mix of relief and inevitability, as Linda’s boyfriend arrives to take her away.

In the end, the night of intrigue leaves the survivors with more questions than answers, and the grim truth lingers in the halls of Blackshaw Towers: a family feud, a carefully staged illusion of murder, and the unsettling realization that the real danger came from the very people they trusted most. The walls still hold their secrets, and the moorland winds carry whispers of what happened, long after the lights have faded.
