As the sun descends on the last day of Camp Firewood’s summer camp in 1981, the lives of its youthful counselors intertwine like threads in a rich tapestry. The atmosphere buzzes with excitement as everyone gears up for the much-anticipated talent show, serving as a celebration of fond memories and significant experiences.
Gene, a Vietnam War veteran, grapples with an array of unconventional desires that he has kept under wraps. However, after receiving an unexpected pep talk from a witty can of vegetables, he musters the courage to reveal his authentic self to the entire camp community. His bravery is met with an enthusiastic standing ovation that resonates throughout the crowd.
In a different corner of the camp, drama instructors Ben and Susie find themselves swept away by their passion for one another. Their romantic feelings reach a climax after they share an enchanting night with counselor McKinley. In a charming by-the-lake ritual, they are “wed” by Beth, who later insists they relinquish their talent show slot to an amusing outsider named Steve.
As the talent show progresses, Steve takes the stage and delivers a captivating performance that showcases his incredible mental abilities, conjuring a storm that both fascinates and unsettles the audience. The crowd erupts in applause as they witness Steve’s extraordinary capabilities.
Counselor Coop silently harbors feelings for Katie, who is entangled in a tumultuous relationship with Andy, the charming yet arrogant lifeguard known for his infidelities with counselor Lindsay. To help Coop move on, Katie introduces him to a mysterious woman, sparking an unexpected romantic connection that leaves them both enchanted. However, as the night wears on and the talent show draws to a close, Katie, swayed by Andy’s undeniable allure, reluctantly reverts to him, leaving Coop heartbroken and speechless.
In a moment of solidarity, Gene steps in to support Coop during his heartbreak by leading him through a rigorous training program that transforms Coop into a self-assured and impressive contestant. As Coop finally steps into the limelight at the talent show, Katie heartbreakingly professes her love to him, only to once again turn to Andy’s fleeting charms.
As twilight envelopes the camp, director Beth becomes intrigued by Henry, an astrophysicist with a fascination for the universe, who happens to be vacationing nearby. Although initially hesitant, Henry eventually accepts her invitation to share his celestial knowledge with the campers, forging a beautiful bond characterized by engaging projects and enlightening discussions, which blossoms into romance between himself and Beth.
While working on thrilling scientific endeavors, Henry and the children stumble upon an extraordinary event: Skylab is scheduled to re-enter Earth’s atmosphere and possibly land at Camp Firewood. Unfazed by the looming threat, they devise a plan to track its landing site: the talent show stage. As Henry manipulates their makeshift device, he becomes convinced it can redirect the space debris. During the exhilarating stormy night of the talent show, Henry and the campers utilize their contraption to guide the Skylab fragment safely to rest on the grass.
Amid the excitement, Counselor Victor wrestles with his own insecurities, masking the fact that he’s still a virgin. He eagerly anticipates a night of romance with Abby but finds himself instead on a rafting trip with Neil and several campers. Feeling neglected, Victor makes a desperate decision to steal a van and rush back to Abby, only to crash and arrive at the camp on foot, disheartened when he realizes she has completely forgotten about him. Ultimately, he finds solace in reconnecting with Neil and the campers after an adventure leaves them lost on the river.
In a heartfelt moment, Arts and Crafts instructor Gail faces her emotional turmoil as her class becomes chaotic, prompting the children to rally together in an impromptu group therapy session. This supportive environment helps Gail confront and release herself from the emotional burdens caused by her ex-husband, Ron. In a display of newfound courage during the talent show, she asserts herself when Ron attempts to reach out, embracing her path to freedom alongside Aaron, who has unintentionally become her confidant. The following morning, Gail and Aaron unveil their blossoming romance, as the campers and staff bask in the glow of this heartfelt revelation.
