A successful New York advertising executive named Martin Sloan takes a quiet drive through the countryside on a warm summer afternoon around 1959, and a routine car service at a small-town gas station near Homewood becomes the starting point for an unexpected and surreal journey. After wandering into town, he is struck by how little the place seems to have changed since his own childhood, from the storefronts to the familiar rhythms of everyday life, even noticing that ice cream sodas somehow still cost a penny or two less than he remembers. The familiar comes into sharper focus when he steps into the park and catches a glimpse of his younger self, a boy carving his name into the bandstand just as Martin recalls from his own youth. This encounter unsettles the adult Martin, who approaches the boy in the hope of guiding him, only to trigger fear in the child and send the younger version running away.
