The film opens with a humorous montage that showcases various news anchors fumbling their lines and dealing with unfortunate mishaps. One particularly comedic segment features a news reporter who is hilariously attacked by a group of cats during a live pet store segment.

Meghan Miles, played by Elizabeth Banks, dreams of becoming a highly respected anchorwoman. Her aspirations are put to the test when she receives a supportive call from her mother, wishing her luck for her important interview.

Meghan embarks on a field report regarding a significant traffic jam she nicknames 'Carpocalypse Now'. Unfortunately, her reliance on Chopper Steve, played by Kevin Nealon, proves to be unproductive as he is more occupied with texting than reporting news.

After a tiring day of reporting, Meghan returns home to find her friends, Rose and Brooke, waiting to celebrate what they assume will be her promotion. Instead, she is devastated to learn from her producer, Willie Garson, that another candidate has won the anchor position.

To cheer Meghan up, her friends encourage her to let loose in the city. They help her borrow a stylish dress, and Meghan ends up getting drunk at a club where she meets a bartender named Gordon, leading to a passionate night together in his apartment.

The next morning, Meghan receives a voicemail that brings renewed hope; the anchor position has reopened after scandalous images of Wendy emerged. Her spirits lifted, she realizes she must act quickly to seize this chance.

In a frantic rush to get to the news station, Meghan discovers her car has been towed. As she attempts to chase down the tow truck, she faces a series of absurd mishaps, including an encounter with an off-duty cab driver who mistakes her for a stripper.

Meghan's misadventures continue as she has chaotic encounters, including run-ins with police officers who suspect her of being a prostitute. She narrowly avoids arrest and navigates her way through the city's unpredictable chaos.

Amid the ridiculous challenges she faces, Meghan desperately seeks assistance and even approaches a rabbi for help. Unfortunately, her attempts lead to further complications and she finds herself fleeing once again.

Meanwhile, Gordon embarks on a mission to find Meghan after she goes missing. He seeks help from her friends while utilizing the GPS from her car keys, showing his determination to come to her rescue.

As Meghan tries to retrieve her belongings, she finds herself in increasingly ridiculous situations, including adopting a false identity as a masseuse to dodge her earlier pursuers. The chaos reaches its peak as she masterminds a dramatic escape to avoid arrest.

At the impound lot, Meghan realizes that her efforts to regain her car leave her in an even more complex predicament without the means to pay the fees. This frustrating moment highlights the extent of her wild day and the challenges she faces.

Just as Meghan feels hopeless, Gordon arrives to save the day. They quickly escape together, marking a significant turning point in their relationship as Meghan prepares to return to the news station.
