In a small town, Wilfred Simpson [Joe E. Brown] is a diligent railroad station clerk and fiancé to Phyllis Jenkins [Maxine Doyle], a pairing that colors the everyday rhythm of their community. Their routine life shifts the moment they meet the flashy trick cyclist Harry St. Clair [Gordon Westcott], who wants to retrieve his bicycles from the very station where Wilfred works. Harry uses the moment to slip into Phyllis’s company, and the next day Wilfred’s mood darkens as he vents his jealousy during a performance at the town theater. Harry rises to the challenge with a slick, confident charm, and once again disappears with Phyllis, leaving Wilfred seething and unsure.

Behind the scenes, Mabel [Dorothy Christy], Harry’s wife and loyal helper, feeds Wilfred a false story that Harry has run off to marry Phyllis. Trusting the tale, Wilfred does what he believes is right and rallies the entire town to intervene, only to stumble when he discovers the confrontation has occurred on the front porch of the Jenkins family house—an embarrassing misreading that reveals him as foolish in the eyes of those he hoped to protect. The incident drives a wedge between Wilfred and Phyllis, who breaks off the engagement, and he resolves to leave town for good.

On the road, Wilfred crosses paths with his old friend Clinton Hemmings [Frank McHugh], who reveals plans to enter the famed Six Day Bike Race. Having never found success in anything he’s tried, Wilfred wagers everything on a fresh start and joins Clinton as a partner, hoping the grueling race will win Phyllis back. They take on roles as bicycle messengers to covertly practice, pushing their limits as they train in secret for the demanding competition.

A pivotal day arrives when Wilfred, while delivering a meal and a note to the hotel room of Harry St. Clair, overhears a woman’s voice and, assuming it’s Phyllis, rushes in and punches the figure. The person turns out to be Mabel [Dorothy Christy], and Wilfred is arrested, his fervor clouding his judgment as he pays the price for his impulsive mistake.

Race day comes with excitement and tension: the event begins without Wilfred, Clinton riding ahead on his own. Yet a turn of fortune finds Phyllis intervening, and Wilfred is released from jail by her contrite gesture. He climbs aboard a borrowed bicycle and hurries to the velodrome, arriving just in time to join the competition. An unusual advantage—an ether-saturated cloth snagged in his rear-wheel spokes—gives him a crucial edge as rivals falter from the fumes while attempting to overtake him.

The race culminates in a dramatic showdown between Harry and Wilfred, testing nerve, luck, and endurance. Despite a series of setbacks, Wilfred and Clinton persevere and ultimately emerge victorious, their perseverance rewarded by more than a win. Back in town, Wilfred and Phyllis marry, and their life together grows richer as they share simple, ongoing bicycle outings that include their infant son, blending the past trials with a hopeful, enduring future.
