He’s reassigned as assistant pastor at Our Lady of Perpetual Fortitude, a rural parish presided over by the stern Monsignor Jefferson Wicks. The town’s spiritual heart is shaped by Langstrom, the bishop who sends Jud to Chimney Rock, and by the devoted Martha Delacroix, Wicks’s right-hand woman. The church’s day-to-day life centers on the groundskeeper Samson and the devoted, sometimes weary, parishioners who cling to a fragile faith. Alessia Yoko Fontana Grace, a pivotal figure in the Wicks lineage, has a fraught history with the church: it was her father Prentice Wicks who, guided by a promise of inheritance, kept Grace in the church’s orbit long enough to see the fortune vanish after his death. Prentice’s crypt looms over the church grounds, and the scandal surrounding Grace’s past becomes a shadow that haunts every new promise from the church’s leaders.

The town’s quiet is fractured by a clash of power and belief. Vera Draven, a tightly wound lawyer with a complicated family history, and her adopted son Cy become entangled in the Wicks legacy, while Simone Vivane, a formerly disabled concert cellist and generous donor, sends the church into fevered debates about healing and doubt. The church’s authority is challenged by Jud’s candid sermons, which some hear as incendiary and others as hopeful. A key clue emerges from a taped game video in a remote shed: traces of an RF burst that could have influenced the footage—and perhaps masked the exact moment of Wicks’s death. Yet the sequence of events remains stubbornly unclear.

As Blanc and Jud probe deeper, they uncover a web of secrets surrounding Wicks’s final acts. Jud’s own choices—staying inside the church after the crowd dispersed and later stepping away from the investigation—become pieces of a larger puzzle about loyalty, reputation, and the burdens of leadership. The buried fortune around Prentice’s legacy—an $80 million stake known in whispers as Eve’s Apple—pulls the narrative toward a dramatic reckoning: Cy, Vera, and others reveal and conceal truths about the fortune, the crypt, and the town’s faith in what a pastor can or cannot do.

The detective’s work converges on a crucial revelation: a staged resurrection designed to rekindle belief and protect reputations. The plan involves multiple players, including Samson, Nat Sharp, and Martha, whose confessions finally illuminate how the church’s fragile sanctity was weaponized for personal gain. As the truth comes into the light, Nat’s plot to seize the fortune unravels, and Martha’s own desperation—caught between guilt and absolution—culminates in a self-sacrificial choice that reshapes the town’s sense of justice and mercy. In the climactic hours, Blanc distills a complicated truth: not every mystery has a neat resolution, and grace may come with unfinished questions.

A year later, Father Jud reopens the church as Our Lady of Perpetual Grace, attempting to guide a community scarred by scandal toward renewal. Cy, now the would-be heir to Prentice’s fortune, lurks with the threat of legal action if the diamond, Eve’s Apple, is not returned. Yet the community presses on, with Blanc departing as new parishioners enter for the inaugural service and Jud conceiving a plan to safeguard the fortune. The diamond itself remains hidden, concealed inside the church’s new crucifix, a quiet emblem of both the church’s enduring faith and its hard-won lessons.
