Under the Silver Lake

The ending of Under the Silver Lake reveals that, despite all of Sam’s obsession and the clues he uncovers, the conspiracy he believed in turns out to be largely true but ultimately meaningless to his life. Her disappearance was fabricated — she faked her death to stay with the cult, which seems to have convinced her of its divine purpose.

As Sam digs deeper, he learns that the conspiracy is real but also that it is a vast, centuries-old manipulation involving subliminal messages in songs and hidden codes across media, all orchestrated by a mysterious figure called the Songwriter. When he confronts and kills the Songwriter, it feels like a victory in his quest, but it ultimately does not change anything—his understanding of the conspiracy doesn’t make him feel fulfilled or important. The film emphasizes that Sam’s search has little significance beyond himself; his life remains aimless, and the deeper truth doesn’t alter his world.

In the final scenes, Sam’s obsession becomes even more apparent as he reconnects with a neighbor, Bird Woman, and engages in a sexual encounter — a moment that symbolizes his desire for connection beyond the conspiracy. Meanwhile, the Homeless King, who is a figure representing insecurity and the societal fears behind Sam’s obsession, tells him to “stay quiet.” The last shot shows graffiti of the same cryptic symbol from the beginning of the film painted on Sam’s wall, and his smile suggests he still believes he is part of something bigger. The ending leaves us with the idea that Sam’s obsession, his illusions of uncovering hidden truths, continue to control him, and he remains lost in a rabbit hole that doesn’t lead anywhere meaningful. The film’s final message is that the conspiracy he chased is as empty and pointless as his own life’s pursuits—an unsettling commentary on the nature of obsession and the search for meaning in the shadows.
