In the 1840s Faizabad, a betrothed teenager named Amiran is kidnapped by her criminal neighbour, Dilawar, as revenge against Amiran’s father—the local daroga who testified against him. Dilawar sells Amiran to Khanum Jaan, the formidable madam of a kotha in Lucknow, where she is taught the arts of companionship and performance that define the world of the tawaifs. At the kotha, Amiran is given the name Umrao Jaan, and as the years pass, she grows into a remarkable poet and a consummate entertainer, catching the eye of many with her grace and wit.
The narrative widens as a young nobleman, Nawab Sultan, is captivated by Umrao’s beauty and the poetry she wields with equal parts honesty and charm. Yet duty pulls at him: he must wed someone else to satisfy his family’s ambitions, leaving Umrao with a hollow ache that runs deep. In search of solace, Umrao turns to Faiz Ali, and the two flee together in a fateful elopement—only to reveal that Faiz Ali is a wanted bandit. Their journey ends tragically when he is killed by the police, shattering Umrao’s hopes.
Umrao finds a fresh stage in Kanpur, where she forges a name as both poet and tawaif. Her path is interrupted when she is brought back to Khanum Jaan by her kotha keepers, Gohar Mirza and Husseini, who recognize her enduring talent and resilience. In Kanpur she meets the Begum of the city and discovers a startling truth: she is actually Ramdei, a woman who had been abducted alongside Amiran years earlier by Dilawar. Ramdei’s fate grows entwined with Nawab Sultan’s as she ends up marrying his mother, intertwining the lives of these families in surprising ways.
As the British siege of Lucknow intensifies, the city’s inhabitants evacuate, and Umrao’s world shifts once more. The refugee caravan halts in a small village that Umrao recognizes as her hometown Faizabad, though the locals do not know her and urge a performance instead. This moment underscores how time and war have erased the familiar from her life, even as her excellence as a performer remains intact.
Returning to her childhood home, Umrao faces a mixture of welcome and scorn. Her mother greets her with warmth, but her younger brother rejects her, branding her a disgrace for choosing the life of a tawaif and ordering her to leave. The weight of judgment and abandonment presses hard on her, yet she endures. When the mutiny subsides, Umrao Jaan makes her way back to Lucknow, only to discover that her beloved kotha has been looted and left deserted, a stark reminder of the personal losses that simmer beneath the grand historical currents surrounding her.
