The narrative spans from 1935, through the upheavals of the Second Sino-Japanese War, into the early years of the People's Republic of China in 1950. It traces how war, occupation, and shifting political regimes reshape the lives of performers and their communities. The timeline anchors the transformation of culture and gender roles within larger historical currents.

The story centers on a Shaoxing village where a fledgling Yue Opera troupe performs, embodying the region's cultural traditions. It then travels to urban Shanghai, and later references Zhejiang's countryside, reflecting the movement of performers between rural roots and the city stages. The setting highlights how performance spaces were one of the few arenas where women could gain visibility within a patriarchal society.

Chunhua's rise from runaway trainee to leading performer embodies a struggle for personal autonomy within a restrictive society.
