Kate Carter is a determined college student, immersed in the world of storm chasing alongside her team, which includes Javi, Addy, Praveen, and her boyfriend, Jeb. Equipped with a Dorothy V doppler, their mission is bold: to launch barrels of sodium polyacrylate solution into an approaching tornado, with the intention of diminishing its power. However, as the colossal storm approaches, their efforts take a devastating turn. Caught in the tornado's ferocious grip, Kate, Addy, Praveen, and Jeb are forced to abandon their vehicle, seeking refuge under a bridge. Tragically, they are separated, and the chaos claims the lives of Addy, Praveen, and Jeb, leaving Kate with haunting memories of that day.
Fast forward five years, and Kate now finds herself working at a NOAA office in New York City, while Javi has become a college graduate and is employed with a storm-chasing outfit named Storm Par. He reaches out to her with an enticing offer—a week-long position assisting in the testing of a new tornado scanning system back in Oklahoma. Initially gripped by her past traumas, Kate hesitates to accept the opportunity. However, after witnessing a news report detailing the destruction caused by a recent tornado, her resolve shifts, and she joins Javi.
Upon their arrival in Oklahoma, Kate reunites with the Storm Par team, which includes the businessman Scott. The storm-chasing scene soon becomes crowded, with the famed YouTube personality Tyler Owens—known as the "Tornado Wrangler"—and his crew, which comprises Boone, Lily, Dexter, and Dani, as well as London journalist Ben covering the American storm-chasing phenomenon.
The teams gear up for their initial mission. As they encounter a tornado near a wind farm, they split into several groups to set up their scanners. Unfortunately, Kate experiences a PTSD episode, leaving her unable to assist Javi. Amid swirling winds during another tornado strike, their equipment is damaged, and the duo narrowly escapes destruction. With a desire to assist in recovery efforts, they venture into a nearby town devastated by the storm, where Kate reevaluates her earlier judgments about Tyler and his team's altruistic efforts despite their reputation for chasing fame.
At a nearby motel, she encounters Tyler, who invites her to a rodeo, where they share more about their backgrounds—Tyler's prior life as a rodeo cowboy before his shift to meteorology and Kate's roots in Sapulpa, Oklahoma. When a formidable tornado descends upon the area, they are forced to hide together, and afterward, Kate confronts Javi regarding potential exploitation of the disaster by Riggs, a suspicious Storm Par investor.
Seeking solace at her mother's farm, Kate grapples with guilt and loss, but Tyler encourages her to utilize her past research in a new experiment. After some resistance, she agrees to collaborate with Tyler once they encounter another tornado and deploy the solution. Unfortunately, the tornado fails to dissipate as intended, prompting Kate to rethink their approach using Javi's newly acquired scanning data.
With renewed determination, Kate joins Tyler and their crew to pursue a developing tornado near El Reno, where chaos ensues. Javi and Scott find themselves in a precarious situation, leading to Javi’s decision to leave Storm Par and assist Kate instead. The team springs into action, rescuing trapped townsfolk, but Tyler gets injured amid the havoc.
In a climactic moment, Kate furiously drives Tyler's truck into the destructive path of the tornado to launch the solution, even as disaster looms over her. The tornado intensifies, tearing apart nearby structures, but ultimately, her efforts bear fruit as the storm begins to calm, allowing Tyler, Javi, and the others to rescue Kate and revel in their hard-fought victory.
Afterward, amidst farewells at the airport, both Javi and Tyler express hope for the future of their research in tornado mitigation. As Kate prepares to leave for New York, she echoes Tyler's inspiring quote “If you feel it, chase it,” just before a weather announcement hints at stormy delays. With that, Tyler rushes after her, suggesting that the adventure is far from over.
