Night of the Twisters

Bob Iverson, David Ferry, a seasoned storm chaser with the Kansas State Tornado Center, is on a rural Nebraska road, tracking a menacing supercell. From his vantage, a tornado touches down almost a mile south, and he radioes a warning to a nearby family just as their daughter Sarah, Sumela Kay, arrives home from school. The warning comes in time to push them into their root cellar, moments before the twister tears through the farm above and seals a dramatic, life-changing moment for everyone involved.

In Blainsworth, about 190 kilometers southwest, Danny Hatch, Devon Sawa, is an aspiring teenager who feels constant pressure from his stepfather, Jack, John Schneider, a former football star who runs a struggling sporting goods store. At the town’s fall festival, Danny’s bike gets damaged during a race, but the momentum of a momentary setback is swallowed by luck when he wins a brand-new bike in a bank raffle. The new ride becomes a symbol of possibility, yet the day soon spirals into a test of resilience as Danny and his friend Arthur Darlington, Amos Crawley, run into Arthur’s sisters, Stacey, Laura Bertram, a teenage girl Danny has a crush on, and Ronnie Vae, Megan Kitchen, a younger girl in their orbit. Meanwhile, Laura Hatch, Lori Hallier, is preparing dinner at home as Jack heads out to finish errands, leaving Danny in charge to babysit his infant half-brother, Ryan, who will be cared for by Aunt Jenny later in the day.

As the afternoon wears on, a powerful storm edge inches closer. At 3:37 p.m., Bob decides to push southwest toward Blainsworth, while Stan, the meteorologist he’s radioing, notes an unusual anticyclonic pattern for the season. When the storm reaches town, Bob runs into Laura at the Salty Dawg diner, a brief encounter that foreshadows the convergence of two families under extraordinary pressure. Tornado sirens blare through Capital Heights, first omen and then reality, as Danny’s home is ripped apart. Danny and Arthur scramble to escape through the wreckage’s collapsing beams, crawling out into a landscape that bears the scars of the tornado’s ruthless path. They soon come upon Stacey and Ronnie Vae, survivors who had fled the Darlington home, now turned into a ruin, and they all face the grim reality of the loss of life around them—most notably the bank manager who did not survive the storm.

Danny and Stacey rally to help. They stumble upon Danny’s grandmother, Belle Hatch, Helen Hughes, who is found injured under boards in a damaged barn, while Jack is discovered trapped under an overturned truck on a blocked road. Danny and the rescue teams work against time to pull Jack free, a moment that does not instantly repair the rift between stepfather and stepson. Laura and Aunt Jenny survive the diner’s ruin and seek refuge at a community shelter with Bob, where Laura hopes to locate her husband and children as the storm intensifies.

In the shelter, Danny opens up to Stacey, admitting that Jack is not his biological father and that he has long felt he must prove himself to earn respect. Stacey helps him see a path toward reconciliation, and the pair resolve to bring the family back together. Danny seizes a chance to reunite the Hatchs by taking the two-way transmitter to the cleared path and joining Jack in a Jeep loaned for the rescue mission. The group winds their way toward safety, but the tornadoes continue to rage, tearing at the landscape as the family races to outrun the storm. A violent debris-laden wraith of wind follows them, knocking Jack unconscious and threatening to pull Danny from the vehicle. They fight through the chaos and seek shelter beneath an overpass as the storm passes, and dawn reveals a calm, clear sky.

As the first light breaks, the family emerges to a morning of fragile renewal. The three tornadoes have left a trail of destruction and a changed town, but they have also accelerated healing. One year later, Danny is dating Stacey, Arthur has risen to class president, Bob and Jenny have married and are preparing for twins, and Belle has passed away after witnessing the family’s endurance. Jack, now a supportive stepfather, has become a high school football coach and has taken up new hobbies once his workshop was destroyed. In the quiet aftermath, Danny reflects that surviving the storm taught him to live life to the fullest, and the Hatch family, along with their neighbors, continues forward with a renewed sense of togetherness and gratitude.
