Ben Manibag embodies the quintessential overachieving Asian American archetype living in a wealthy suburb of Orange County. Yet, underneath his polished exterior lurks a secret life filled with mischief alongside his closest friends, Virgil and Han Lue.

Initially, Ben makes the cut for the basketball team, but soon finds himself stuck on the bench. His fate intertwines with Daric Loo, the senior valedictorian and club president, who introduces Ben to an underground scheme involving the mass creation and selling of cheat sheets to classmates. As the operation expands, Ben enlists Virgil and Han into the hustle, leading the four to accumulate a small fortune.

As Ben’s feelings for Stephanie deepen, he faces competition from Steve Choe, a private school student and Stephanie’s boyfriend. When Steve discovers Ben’s crush, he uses it to his advantage, compelling Ben to escort Stephanie to the Winter Formal in exchange for his silence. As the group’s illegal activities escalate, plunging into the theft of computer parts and distribution of drugs, Ben finds himself wrapped tighter in their unlawful embrace.

The weight of his choices hits Ben hard, culminating in a shocking realization during a cocaine-fueled episode that leaves him terrified and bloodied. Choosing to step back from the chaos, Ben re-focuses on his academics and rekindles a relationship with Stephanie, bravely inviting her to the Winter Formal, which she joyfully accepts.

However, Steve’s manipulative tactics pull Ben back into the fray, enticing him with a risky proposition that could transform their lives. The group is left reeling when Steve proposes they rob his own parents’ house. While initially hesitant, Ben and Han find themselves persuaded by Daric’s rationale that this score will serve as both revenge on the arrogant Steve and a chance to demonstrate their superiority.

On New Year’s Eve, a sinister plot unfolds at Jesus’s house. In a façade of robbing Steve’s parents, Daric, Virgil, and Han turn against him. Meanwhile, Ben remains vigilant outside, ready to alert them of any trouble. The confrontation spirals into a violent clash, with Steve seeming to take control until he accidentally ends up shot during a struggle. As the chaos erupts, Ben storms in, wielding a baseball bat, and delivers a brutal beating, leaving Steve motionless.

In the aftermath of their horrific act, the group hatches a plan to conceal Steve’s body in Jesus’s backyard for a payment of $300. Unbeknownst to them, Steve is not truly dead. As he begins to show signs of life, Daric seizes the moment to ensure his silence, with Virgil helplessly holding him back as Daric suffocates Steve using a gasoline-soaked rag.

The next day, as they attempt to resume normalcy, Ben and Virgil are confronted by the horrifying reminder of their crime when Steve’s phone rings, echoing hauntingly from the backyard. The call is from none other than Stephanie, throwing Ben into turmoil about whether to come forward or remain silent.

With the guilt weighing heavily on him, Virgil ultimately breaks under pressure, leading to a failed suicide attempt that leaves devastating consequences. Meanwhile, Daric grows paranoid about the chance of betrayal from Han or Virgil, but Ben, choosing denial, walks away from the nightmare.

The story’s climax finds Ben alone, facing an uncertain future. A serendipitous encounter with Stephanie leads to a moment of tenderness as they share a kiss that hints at a renewed relationship.
