Eric wakes from disturbing dreams of murdering unnamed characters. He cleans his dingy studio, then roams the streets of Amsterdam seeking random women to bring home. The disturbing fantasies and his promiscuous behavior hint at deeper wounds that will drive the story.

Two years earlier, Olga discovers Eric on the road and gives him a ride. An immediate attraction sparks between them, and they share a kiss that seals a volatile, intense bond. The moment launches a relationship that will grow despite looming obstacles.

Their initial sexual encounter is interrupted by a traffic accident. The crash creates a barrier when Olga's mother blocks further contact, setting the stage for years of separation. The couple's early passion is immediately tempered by family opposition.

Despite the obstacles, Eric and Olga reconnect and marry. Olga's father is more sympathetic than her mother, and the couple begins a domestic life that blends Bohemian artistry with middle-class pressures. The new union earns cautious acceptance from Olga's circle.

Eric lands a 5000-guilder commission to sculpt the hospital garden, with Olga modeling for the statue. The unveiling is attended by the Dutch queen, but security bars them from the front during the ceremony due to Olga's revealing dress. Frustrated, they fling the maquettes into Amsterdam's canals.

Olga's father dies from illness, intensifying the strain on the family. Eric brings Olga back to Amsterdam, where he continues his artistic career while she takes a steady job on a production line. Olga's mother resents the bohemian lifestyle and questions their suitability as a couple.

The couple's life becomes unstable as Olga exhibits reveries and impulsive tendencies. At a family gathering in a Chinese restaurant, she flirts openly with a family friend, with others seemingly complicit. The public confrontation ends with Eric vomiting and slapping Olga, signaling a deepening rift.

After Olga leaves, Eric vandalizes his studio, trying to erase reminders of her. His attempt to secure a divorce backfires when Olga's mother walks in on him forcing himself onto Olga, and he is banished from her life. The collapse of trust seems definitive.

Olga later becomes engaged to a wealthy American and visits Eric to collect the remainder of her belongings before leaving for the United States. The separation pushes Eric into reevaluating their shared history and his own ambitions.

Eric finds a measure of closure by rescuing a wounded seagull and releasing it when its wing heals. The small, hopeful subplot acts as a counterpoint to the heartbreak of Olga’s departure, signaling his attempt to move forward.

Sometime later, Eric walks into a commercial center and spots Olga, flamboyantly dressed and behaving oddly. She confesses that her American experience was a disaster and reveals she is living with her mother again. The encounter reignites old emotions and unresolved questions.

Eric takes Olga to Paul's hospital after she collapses, where doctors diagnose a brain tumor. Surgical intervention offers no complete cure, and the prognosis grows increasingly grim. The illness becomes the central force sealing their shared fate.

Despite treatment, Olga's condition deteriorates; she has a seizure and dies as her life comes to a quiet end. Before dying, she clings to a few familiar comforts, including a wig and Turkish delight, the latter of which she refuses hardened foods.

Eric walks outside past his sculpture of Olga and dumps her wig in the trash, a stark symbol of his acceptance of her death. He continues his artistic work, carrying her memory as a complex, unresolved chapter closes.
