Julia tracks Zach down to extort hush money over their alleged affair. After the traumatic layoff incident where Hans shot himself, Zach was vulnerable and met Julia at a bar. She used this connection to demand payment, threatening to expose the indiscretion to Emmy unless he paid up. When Zach and Emmy arrived at the Dolomites resort, Julia followed them there to press her advantage.

Earlier in the bar, Julia asks Zach for money and reveals she knows details about his life, hinting at her intent to pursue him.

During the struggle with Julia, the balloon's basket catches fire. The flames burn through the rope that controls the burner valve, shortening it to half its original length. This makes the balloon extremely difficult to control, a shortened rope means less leverage and precision when trying to open the vent to release hot air and regulate ascent. The damaged rope directly causes the balloon to become unstable and continue ascending uncontrollably.

The knife struggle in the basket immediately precedes the fire, linking the violence to the mechanical failure.

This revelation exposes Julia's true motive for targeting Zach. Hans, the employee who shot himself after Zach oversaw the layoffs, was Julia's father. Julia wasn't simply seeking hush money for an affair, she was deliberately pursuing revenge against the man she held responsible for her father's death. The affair claim was likely fabricated or exaggerated as a manipulation tool to get close to Zach and punish him for the corporate decision that drove her father to suicide.

The bar encounter feels planned rather than coincidental, and Julia's aggressive probing for secrets gains new meaning in hindsight.

Emmy's decision stems from the cumulative betrayal she just discovered. When she finds Zach's phone and watches the video confirming his affair with Julia, she confronts him. Instead of apologizing, Zach dismisses her grief about her recent miscarriage and tells her she cannot live without him. This cold, condescending response shatters whatever remained of their marriage. When Zach later slips and pleads for help, Emmy deliberately pushes Julia's corpse toward him, using the dead body as a buffer to ensure he falls to his death rather than risking her own survival to pull him up.

Emmy's discovery of the video and Zach's demeaning response plant the seeds of her final, irreversible choice.

Harry attempts to climb toward the shortened, burned rope to open the vent and stop the balloon's dangerous ascent. While reaching for the rope, Julia regains consciousness and, in an attempt to regain control of the situation, lashes out at Harry. The struggle causes Harry to lose his footing and fall from the basket. His fall leaves only Emmy, Zach, and the injured Julia aboard the now-piloted balloon.

The earlier struggle with Julia and her unpredictable violence sets up this fatal moment.

Zach kills Julia in retaliation after she stabs him in the arm with a knife. When Julia wakes up after being knocked out, she reveals her father's identity and then immediately attacks Zach, stabbing him. The attack provokes Zach into grabbing the fire extinguisher and bludgeoning her in the head, killing her. While technically self-defense, the act is also colored by his knowledge that Julia manipulated and endangered him and Emmy.

Julia's revelation about Hans immediately precedes her violent attack, showing her intent was never reconciliation.

After Harry falls, the balloon is ascending dangerously with no one at the controls. Emmy, despite suffering altitude sickness, manages to reach and operate the vent using the shortened burned rope. She opens the vent to release hot air, which initiates a slow but crucial descent. However, the shortened rope means she has very little room for error, if she opens it too much, they fall too fast; too little, and they continue rising into even more dangerous territory.

The burned rope was already established as compromised, making Emmy's task precarious.

Emmy torching the balloon serves as a literal and symbolic destruction of her old life. The balloon contains the evidence of the night's violence, the bodies of Julia and Zach, the video of infidelity, and the wreckage of what was supposed to be her honeymoon. By burning it all, she eliminates the proof of what transpired and symbolically incinerates her marriage, her hopes, and her past. She then walks away from the flames as a woman reborn but permanently changed.

Emmy's recent miscarriage is the underlying emotional wound that compounds all other conflicts. Her grief has left her emotionally fragile and dependent on Zach, which makes his betrayal even more devastating. Zach's later claim that her grief has clouded her judgment and that she cannot live without him is particularly cruel given this loss. The miscarriage also explains why the honeymoon feels like a desperate attempt to salvage their marriage, the loss of a child has already strained their relationship before Julia's appearance.

At the resort, Emmy's depression is evident, and Zach tries to lift her spirits with the balloon ride.

Zach's deflection is consistent with his character throughout the film. Even at the moment of death, he refuses to take accountability for his affair, his corporate decisions that led to Hans' suicide, or his cruel dismissal of Emmy's grief. Instead of apologizing, he accuses Emmy of being unable to live without him, projecting his own dependence onto her and rewriting the narrative so that her choice to let him fall appears unreasonable rather than a justified response to his betrayals.

Zach's pattern of self-serving behavior is established early when he rationalizes the layoffs as just business.

As the balloon descends uncontrollably, the envelope, the fabric balloon that contains the hot air, collides with the mountain peaks. This creates a dangerous, scraping sound and visually demonstrates how close they are to disaster. The friction from the scrape could potentially tear the envelope, which would cause a catastrophic loss of lift and result in a freefall. Emmy must navigate this hazard while dealing with altitude sickness and managing the damaged rope, making the descent even more harrowing.
