What Is True Friends About? (No Spoilers)

The plot of True Friends (1954) without spoilers: what it is about, who it follows and where it takes place, told without the twists or the ending. Enough to decide whether it is your next watch, not enough to ruin it.

On the outskirts of Moscow, three young friends—Sashka, Borya, and Vaska—drifted along the Yauza River on an old boat, their imaginations carrying them far beyond the city's edge. In those fleeting moments of youthful wonder, they dreamed of a grand voyage down a great river and made a solemn pledge to one another: someday, they would reunite to chase that dream together, no matter where life took them.

Thirty years later, the thread of that childhood promise still pulls at them. Each has found success in his own right: Boris Petrovich Chizhov has become a renowned professor of neurosurgery, his hands skilled in matters of life and consequence; Alexander Fyodorovich Lapin now leads as a doctor of biological sciences and director of an Experimental Institute of Animal Husbandry; and Vasily Vasilyevich Nestratov has risen to become an academician of architecture, his name carrying weight in professional circles. Yet beneath their achievements, the old bond remains—waiting to be rekindled.

When Lapin gathers his companions to finally honor their youthful pact, they set off on a journey down a great river aboard a simple wooden raft. The landscape unfolds around them—changing towns, shifting skies, quiet moments of reflection—as the current carries them through territories both geographic and personal. What begins as an expedition soon takes on deeper dimensions, testing the endurance of friendship and the meanings they have carried through the years. The river flows onward, bearing them toward something none can fully anticipate—only that the journey itself may hold answers worth discovering.
