Robyn Davidson arrives in a small country town in Australia with her dog, Diggity. She settles into the community while seeking her goal of traveling to Ayers Rock and across the vast Australian desert.

To support her upcoming journey, Robyn finds work at a local pub. This job helps her gather resources for her trip, while also becoming part of the town's social fabric.

Robyn negotiates with a local farmer, Kurt Posel, to teach her how to handle camels in exchange for her work. After several months of learning, she is disappointed when Kurt unexpectedly fires her after his partner leaves.

Robyn works for a camel wrangler, Sallay Mahomet, and earns her first camel. As she gains more experience, the locals start referring to her as the 'Camel Lady', though many doubt her ability to complete her journey.

Robyn's friends come to visit her unexpectedly, bringing mixed feelings. Among them is American photographer Rick Smolan, who intrigues Robyn and suggests that she seek sponsorship for her journey.

After discussing her plans, Robyn contacts National Geographic and secures a sponsorship with the condition that Rick will photograph her journey. This agreement marks a significant step towards her expedition.

Robyn faces perilous conditions during her trek, including severe dehydration and the death of animals along the trail. Yet, she continues to push through, resilient despite the harsh environment.
