As dawn broke over the scenic Tiwi Islands in 1976, a daring young woman named Daphne “Daffy” Ford made a courageous move to flee an arranged marriage, seeking freedom from the confines of her traditional upbringing. With family members in hot pursuit, she seized a speedboat, racing towards a future filled with uncertainty.

Fast forward to the present day, where Daffy’s daughter, Lauren Ford, is thriving as a lawyer in Adelaide. Her recent promotion has not only brought her greater responsibilities but also a surprise proposal from her boyfriend, Ned Pelton, who coincidentally is also a lawyer. However, there’s a twist: he has quit his job without informing Lauren and is eager for an impromptu wedding followed by a honeymoon. Graciously, Lauren’s demanding boss, Ms. Hampton, grants her 10 days off to celebrate.

As the couple makes preparations for their nuptials in Darwin, a shocking revelation emerges: Daphne has mysteriously disappeared, leaving behind only murmurs of her existence on the Tiwi Islands. Lauren finds herself conflicted, torn between her intentions to marry her beloved and her urge to uncover her mother’s enigmatic past. Seeking advice, she turns to Ms. Hampton, who agrees to accompany them to Darwin to assist in the wedding arrangements.

On their journey to find Daphne, Lauren and Ned encounter numerous close calls but constantly miss finding her. In heartfelt conversations, Lauren confides in Ned about her mother’s elusive history and expresses her regret over her lack of knowledge regarding her heritage. It is during a meeting with an aunt, who shares tales of the Tiwi Islands, that Lauren begins to appreciate the significance of her mother’s disappearance.

Meanwhile, Ms. Hampton busies herself with wedding plans alongside Lauren’s friends, while also sharing her own narrative of heartache with Trevor, Daphne’s estranged husband. Her previous struggles with unrequited love have made her focus solely on work, but the story reveals that even those with hardened hearts are susceptible to the beauty of human connections.

As tensions escalate between Lauren and Ned, she uncovers his secret about quitting his job without her knowledge, causing their relationship to spiral downward. Overwhelmed by this betrayal, Lauren bravely opts to cancel the wedding and embarks on a solo journey to the Tiwi Islands, driven by an urgent need to reconnect with her mother’s troubled legacy. Embraced by her extended family upon her arrival, her first encounter is with Daffy, witnessed outside a church as she reunites with her parents. This emotional moment marks a significant shift for Lauren as she finally meets her grandparents, enveloped by their love and acceptance. In a private conversation, she shares her engagement fears with Daffy, voicing her anxiety about potentially regretting her marriage, much like her mother did. Daffy, however, imparts that although she never regretted her marriage, she deeply mourns the estrangement from her family.

With both concern and determination, Lauren conveys her realizations to Ned, who is found at the airport, initially distracted by his departure. After being nudged by Ms. Hampton, he eventually hears from Lauren. She reveals her desire to say “I do” amidst the picturesque backdrop of the Tiwi Islands, where the sun sets beautifully into the sea. Ned quickly makes his way to Trevor’s house, encouraging his son to shake off his disheveled appearance and join him for Lauren’s big day. Despite their late arrival, they speed across the water on the iconic speedboat that Daffy once used to escape, making up for lost time. As Lauren and Ned exchange vows surrounded by their loved ones, Ned expresses his intentions to embark on a new culinary path, while Trevor and Daffy relish in their rekindled romance, celebrating in the warmth of this joyous occasion.
