Charles is the misanthropic owner of a photo shop who lives a solitary, controlling life. At night he sits in a bowl of ice cream, using it as a disturbing sexual outlet. This odd ritual foreshadows his need for ritualized order and personal distance from others.

Charles discovers a backlog of unclaimed photos at the counter and begins calling customers to remind them to pick up. He hopes for human connection through these reminders. One of the customers touched by this is Florence, an elderly woman with a troubled life.

We learn Florence is tormented by her gambling-addicted husband, Lester. She longs for her son Willie, who joined the army two decades ago and has not received her letters. The army mail-room's negligence has kept them apart.

Charles tries to date a blunt prostitute named Lola Vagina but finds her too extroverted and forward for his taste. He remains socially awkward and isolated. The episode underscores his difficulty forming real connections.

When two final packages turn up, Charles goes to Florence to deliver her photographs. Meeting her, he is drawn to her obsessive cleanliness and calm, which hints at a possible relationship. This encounter sets the plot toward marriage.

Charles returns to his photo shop to find the last package from a nameless customer. He cannot reach the sender by phone and opens the envelope, discovering photographs of random places and people. The next image is a photo of his own dead body, and the film closes on his terrified eyes as the sounds of Lester's laughter and a dog growl echo.
