Mahesh, Dhanush, is the son of a fisherman who grows up amid his parents’ constant arguing and the rough intimacy that colors their relationship. The film follows five high school friends—Dhanush as Mahesh, Sherin Shringar as Pooja, Abhinay as Vishnu, Shilpa as Anitha, and Ramesh as Harish—plus Divya, Gangeshwari the latter’s friend, all navigating adolescence under the weight of troubled homes. Pooja’s family background is defined by a strict, orthodox businessman father who remains suspicious of her every move, a figure brought into sharper relief by Pooja’s own home life and Pyramid Natarajan as Pooja’s father.

Vishnu, whose father neglects his wife and instead keeps a maid as his lover, and Anitha, whose parents live abroad absorbed in work and business, complete this tight-knit circle of friends who share a sense of alienation. Harish, drilled by a sadistic father, anchors the group’s awareness of how fragile childhood can be when faces of authority become threats at home.

When Anitha falls deeper into drug use, the friends decide to run away with her, aided by Mani, a pavement bookseller and an older confidant. Ramesh Khanna brings Mani to life in the story, and the plan is meant to rehabilitate Anitha while offering a escape from the suffocating pull of their families. The escape, however, quickly spirals into a brutal test of their survival skills. The young group holes up in a hotel, only to be mistaken by the police for engaging in illicit activities. Mani rescues them, but the money they brought is stolen by an inspector, and trying to reach their parents only proves to be a mistake—their parents seem indifferent, leaving them to confront a world that does not seem to need them.

The crisis exposes a painful truth: these teenagers can no longer rely on the adults around them. Amid the chaos, a life-changing moment blooms: Pooja and Mahesh become intimate, a development that shatters Divya’s faith in her friends and leaves her unsettled about the choices that lie ahead. Vishnu discovers that the remaining money has vanished, while Anitha disappears, suspected of slipping deeper into drug use. The trio—Vishnu, Mani, and Mahesh—set out late at night to locate Anitha, leaving Pooja and Divya with Harish.

The search turns harrowing when the friends stumble upon Anitha being escorted by men who intend to sell her into prostitution. Harish intervenes and is stabbed, marking a brutal turning point for the group. With no other safety net in sight, they decide to return home, their resolve hardened by the sense that they cannot survive in this world on their own.

Back at school, the principal—a stern figure who casts blame on parents for their children’s escape—delivers a lecture that underscores the parents’ neglect. In a moment of despair, Pooja drinks an unnamed acid from the school lab, and Mahesh leaps from the second floor. Both are rushed to the hospital, and their classmates converge in the ICU to be near them. The other students’ raw, dark humor meets a rare note of relief as they realize their friends may survive. The principal reports that the parents are not to blame for their children’s actions, and the parents depart in shame, leaving the youths to piece together what they’ve become.

The narrative then shifts in a flashback, revealing that Mahesh, now serving in the military, has returned to his old school and quietly recalls these events. He has not disturbed Pooja since that fateful night, and he wonders about his missing friends. A chance encounter with the principal confirms that the man does not recognize him, a moment that underscores how many students the principal has seen over the years. In Mahesh’s quiet certainty, he tells himself that the principal would have witnessed many such stories and that perhaps his friends are faring better, even if the path back to them remains uncertain.
