Prabhu, an orphan, is raised by Murali’s mother and serves as the general manager for Murali’s marketing agency in Madras. Prabhu is treated not just as a loyal friend but as a brother, someone Murali leans on for all major business decisions. In the shadows of this arranged camaraderie, Padma, a college student, becomes the object of Prabhu’s quiet affection. Padma’s life intersects with Murali’s world, but she stands apart from his advances. The office also houses Jayanthi, Padma’s younger relative and a young widow who works in Murali’s firm. She complicates the picture with her own vulnerabilities and desires, adding a charged layer to the triangle of love, loyalty, and temptation.

Murali is an alcoholic with a roving eye, blissfully unaware of the depth of Prabhu’s love for Padma. Padma herself remains the few who rebuke Murali’s advances; she is the one who resists him, choosing autonomy over a familiar, if hollow, patronage. Yet Jayanthi, aware of Prabhu and Padma’s bond, is not merely a spectator. Her own emotions are stirred by Prabhu’s presence, and the tension between duty, desire, and propriety begins to pull at the seams of the relationships around them. A tense episode blossoms when Jayanthi accompanies Prabhu and Padma to a film screening. Unable to hold back her latent longing, Jayanthi’s emotions surface in a moment of private indiscretion inside Murali’s car, an act that unsettles everyone involved. Guilt follows swiftly. Murali offers to give Jayanthi a ride, and the trio’s secret moment lingers in the memory, but the secrecy and the consequences weigh heavily on their hearts. This incident unravels a thread that will tug at every future choice.

In the wake of the night’s events, a troubled Jayanthi takes leave and travels to her village, while Padma accompanies her, leaving Prabhu to finish his official tour. Prabhu plans a surprise for Padma and, driven by a mix of longing and responsibility, travels to Jayanthi’s village to find Padma. Upon arrival, he discovers Padma is away at a wedding, and Jayanthi is alone. Jayanthi persuades Prabhu to stay overnight so they can meet Padma the following day. That decision sets off a sequence of emotional entanglements: during the night, Jayanthi and Prabhu become intimate, an act that fills Prabhu with guilt and compels him to pen a remorseful letter to Jayanthi before leaving.

Padma returns to Madras with the weight of what she has learned and begins to distance herself from Prabhu, though she keeps the reason private. Murali, meanwhile, continues to pursue Padma with renewed vigor. When Padma falls and Murali steps in to help, he earns her father’s approval by arranging her hospital care. Murali then shares his feelings for Padma with Prabhu, who chooses silence out of respect for the fragile peace already established in the lives around him. Prabhu accompanies Murali’s mother as their family formally proposes Murali’s marriage to Padma, and Padma’s father accepts, though Padma herself remains reticent. The weight of the truth—Prabhu’s letter to Jayanthi and the life that follows—looms over the decision.

The revelation comes soon enough: Padma discovers that Prabhu’s letter to Jayanthi exposed a hidden pregnancy, a secret that changes everything. Shaken, Prabhu leaves Madras without informing Murali and his mother, who are left dismayed and confused about his sudden departure. In a turn of fate, Jayanthi writes to Prabhu from the village, revealing her pregnancy, and Murali, upon reading the letter, cuts ties with his old friend in anger and hurt.

Determined to make amends, Prabhu searches for Jayanthi and finds her in Bangalore. He arranges to marry her, but tragedy strikes when she dies in an accident before the wedding can take place. In tribute to her and to give her dignity, he ties a thaali around her neck, a mark of marriage, and decides to move on to a quieter life in Ooty. Yet the web of relationships remains unresolved.

Meanwhile, Murali and Padma’s wedding is postponed when Murali falls ill and is advised to rest. The couple retreats to an estate for a holiday, unaware that Prabhu is also there, quietly continuing to reconcile with the past. When Prabhu meets them, he offers a heartfelt apology for the way he left and the pain his departure caused. Padma, who has learned that Prabhu had married Jayanthi before Jayanthi’s death, chooses to forgive him and attempts to rekindle their bond.

The truth, however, erupts at a critical moment: Murali confronts Prabhu at a cliff’s edge, furious at the sight of him with Padma. Before a gun can be raised, Padma speaks up and unfolds the shared history—the original love between them, the interferences that led to Jayanthi’s marriage to Prabhu, and Prabhu’s honorable decision to legitimise their child by marrying Jayanthi. The revelation softens Murali, and the three characters reach a place of fragile understanding.

In the end, Murali reconciles with Prabhu, recognizing the depth of their bonds and the sincerity of Padma’s love for Prabhu. Murali presents Padma to Prabhu, signaling his support for their union and his departure back to Madras. What remains is a story of friendship tested by love, a web of choices that seek to honor those who could be hurt, and a resolution that affirms the right of each person to pursue honest affection, even when the path is thorny and the consequences are far-reaching. The film closes on a note of uneasy peace, with the three of them choosing to move forward together, carrying the weight of the past but stepping into a more hopeful future.
