Though None Go with Me

Having just finished school in the 1950s, Elizabeth longs to see the world. She has devoted herself to serving God and the church, and she has no intention of settling down with Will when he asks to marry her. This early resolve foreshadows the emotional conflicts that will shape her life.

Elizabeth is asked to pick up the new assistant pastor, Ben Phillips, at the train station and show him around town. She expects an older man, but she meets a young, handsome pastor and they instantly connect. They become engaged soon after.

At the train station departure, Ben gives Elizabeth a Bible inscribed with 'Though none go with me, yet will I follow. No turning back, no turning back.' He explains that God has called him to serve and promises to marry her when he returns. They begin writing letters as he serves as a chaplain in the Korean War.

When Elizabeth's father James dies, she discovers there is little money and the house is heavily mortgaged, leaving the bank poised to repossess. She moves in with Will and takes a secretarial job at his auto insurance company to keep things afloat.

An army officer arrives to tell Elizabeth that Ben has died after a hospital strike during the war. She collapses and faints from the sudden loss.

Elizabeth begins to fall in love with Will, who has become her confidant. He starts dating someone else, which makes her confront her feelings. Eventually, Will declares his love for Elizabeth and they marry.

After their honeymoon, Elizabeth receives a letter from Ben saying he wasn't killed but has been a prisoner of war and will soon be home.

Elizabeth tells Will about Ben's letter, and Will is heartbroken, asking whether she will stay with him out of loyalty or if Ben has her heart. She declares her love for Will and says she does not intend to leave him.

When Ben comes home, he and Elizabeth embrace, but she tells him that she was told he was dead and that she married Will.

Will and Elizabeth enjoy many happy years together and have a son who grows up. The family builds a life together, anchored by faith and love developed through years of shared experiences.

Their son and his wife are killed in a car accident on the way home from a Christmas party, leaving their daughter to be raised by Will and Elizabeth. The loss tests their faith and resilience as they become guardians of their granddaughter.

Elizabeth's faith is shaken as she questions why God continues to take away those she loves. The hardship deepens her sense of duty to her community and the people she has helped over the years.

Will dies of brain disease after more than forty years of marriage. His passing marks another profound loss in Elizabeth's long life and tests her resilience.

Best friend Fran hosts a party to thank Elizabeth for fifty years of service to the community. Attendees recount the lives she has touched, and Ben is among them, offering a quiet note of closure and continuity.
