Child Bride of Short Creek

In 1953 Arizona, the teenage lives of Jessie Jacobs Diane Lane and her friend Naomi Helen Hunt unfold within Short Creek, a small and tightly controlled, patriarchal polygamist community led by President Frank King Conrad Bain. The residents dress in old-fashioned outfits and spend long hours on domestic and agricultural chores using traditional tools, with limited access to modern conveniences. Women are trained to serve and be subservient to their husbands, and travel beyond the enclave is rare while outside influences such as magazines and radio are kept at bay. Jessie’s father, Jay Jacobs Warren Vanders, is married to three women, including Jessie’s mother Mary Jacobs Dee Wallace, who views the arrangement with a mix of resignation and concern as she only sees her husband on certain days. State authorities keep a watchful eye on the community because its customs include polygamous marriages and child marriages, raising questions about the legality and morality of the lifestyle.

The homecoming of Isaac King [Christopher Atkins], King’s nineteen-year-old son, from the Korean War adds tension to the already fragile balance. Isaac has seen the outside world and begins to question the group’s rules, especially the practice of taking new young wives. At the homecoming party, he and Jessie discover a growing attraction, which deepens into love despite the disapproval it invites from the leadership. Isaac’s disillusionment grows as the family’s rigid code becomes harder to justify, and he is further unsettled by the tragedy of Jessie’s younger sisters drowning—not because of any accident, but because they were denied the chance to learn to swim, a consequence of the community’s strict limitations and gender roles. King confides to the men that God has instructed him to take Jessie as another wife, a move that Jessie’s father accepts as divine will, though it strains the already-tense family dynamics.

Desperate to shape their own destinies, Jessie and Isaac acknowledge their feelings and secretly plan to run away together, hoping to escape a life they cannot accept. Jessie’s devotion to her family and desire to honor her parents push her to go along, even as the plan weighs heavily on her. Naomi’s own ambitions collide with harsh reality when she tries to leave for Las Vegas to pursue acting, only to be rescued by King and quickly ushered into a new, older husband’s household, a stark reminder of how the outside world treats those who step out of line.

When the couple’s plan to flee is interrupted by a large police raid, Jessie makes a heart-wrenching decision to return home and warn her family, fearing for their safety more than for her own future. The raid shatters the community: men are jailed, and women and children are moved to barracks to be re-educated into a modern life, a traumatic disruption of the families that have lived there for generations. Jessie’s departure becomes a painful goodbye to Isaac as he boards a bus alone, while Jessie runs back to shield those she loves.

Two years pass, and Jessie and her mother Mary, along with the other women, are shuffled again through the makeshift system of barracks. In a quiet moment of recognition, Jessie spots Isaac arriving in a car, reigniting the old spark. Mary, wiser with the passage of time and aware of the danger and heartache still tethering them, tells her daughter to seize the chance to leave while there is still one, urging her to run. The two make a decisive choice, and Jessie and Isaac escape together, heading toward an uncertain future beyond Short Creek, joined by the unbreakable bond that endured through years of separation and struggle.
